The anesthesia technician at this level assists anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in difficult anesthetic procedures under minimal supervision at the Fayetteville HCC and CBOC Jacksonville, North Carolina. The technician will connect and operate invasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment {e.g., arterial pressure monitors), anesthesia machines, ventilators, intubation bronchoscopes, other anesthesia technical equipment (TEE), and ultrasonic scanning devices.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs daily checks in the process of monitoring equipment and anesthetic machines in the operating suite. Independently sets up and balances the pressure transducers for all hemodynamic monitoring activities performed in the operating suite. Evaluates the suitability of all retrieved specimens for analysis; request a new specimen if it is not usable, processes specimens using equipment or techniques necessary to prepare them for a specific analysis; responds to time factors to ensure the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained. Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results; recognizes abnormal results which require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly. Prepares quality control specimens, conducts quality control procedures on equipment and reagents, and maintains proper records for quality control reports. Maintains all oxygen analyzer components on anesthesia machines. Teaches nurse anesthetists, medical students, house officers and staff physicians the correct use and maintenance of physiologic monitoring equipment, such as the intra-arterial blood pressure monitoring transducers, and all new innovative medical monitoring systems as they become available. Sets up all transducer monitoring equipment and calibrate this equipment using sterile technique for every procedure requiring such technology. Assists anesthesia personnel with preparation of anesthesia carts, stocking, and cleaning anesthesia equipment as necessary. Assists in the-total preparation for major cases. This includes: a) assembling all IV solutions, both for IV therapy and monitoring procedures; b) completely prepares the operating room with the appropriate anesthetic equipment and monitoring devices, i.e., EKG leads connected and readied on OR table, arterial line and radial artery lines. Works with contract personnel including anesthesiologists and contract perfusionists to arrange adequate levels of supplies for all necessary equipment. Performs peripheral IV (intravenous) insertions for vascular access. Basic Requirements: Citizenship - Citizenship of the United States. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education - There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. May be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. Licensure or Certification - Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. English Language Proficiency - Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grandfathering Provision - May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). The following is the standard grandfathering policy for all Title 38 Hybrid qualification standards. All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held , including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply: Such employees in an occupation that does not require a licensure/certification/registration, may be reassigned, promoted, or demoted within the occupation. Such employees in an occupation that requires a licensure/certification/registration, may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level, or demoted within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. Such employees in an occupation that requires a licensure/certification/registration only at higher grade levels must meet the licensure/certification/registration requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels. Grade Determinations: GS-08 Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) - In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must meet the experience AND demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) in your resume. Experience: Must have at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-07) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidates must demonstrate the following KSA's in their resume: Knowledge of the correct use of invasive patient monitoring equipment specific to anesthesiology. Knowledge of basic electrocardiography (EKG). Skill and ability to troubleshoot equipment, often while the patient is anesthetized. Skill and ability to maintain sterility during procedures. Knowledge and understanding of arterial pressure line wave forms including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician or anesthetist of an impending life-threatening situation. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies, medications, and equipment appropriate to more difficult anesthetic procedures such as those found in inpatient settings with more acutely ill patients. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is the GS-08.
