The Urology Health Technician is assigned to the Urology Section of the Surgery Service and performs the majority of his/her duties in the Urology Suites (Clinic and Cysto). The functions of the assigned areas are to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with suspected or previously diagnosed genitourinary disease, provide continuity of follow-up, and carry out appropriate treatment.
Duties
The Urology Health Technician is assigned to the Urology Section of the Surgery Service and performs the majority of his/her duties in the Urology Suites (Clinic and Cysto). The functions of the assigned areas are to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with suspected or previously diagnosed genitourinary disease, provide continuity of follow-up, and carry out appropriate treatment. He/she is responsible for retrieving historical, clinical and diagnostic data.
The incumbent is required to have a broad range of knowledge of the complete anatomy and is involved in virtually all aspects of operation of a very active Urology Section. He/She supports physicians and other medical professionals by using diagnostic instruments, equipment and accessories, and operates diagnostic and therapeutic medical instrumentation and equipment as a part of patient diagnosis and treatment. The Urology health technician must have a working knowledge and skill to provide clinical support including setting up, assisting and post procedure processes in such procedures as flexible cystoscopy, transrectal ultrasound guided biopsy, vasectomy, circumcisions, cystometrogram studies, urethral catheterization, irrigation.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/22/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: assisting medical staff with or performing diagnostic procedures; selecting the correct instruments for a procedure, passing medical instruments and materials to medical/health professionals for a variety of diagnostic tests and procedures; performing health care procedures (such as prostatic/dermal biopsies, cystoscopy, prostate ultrasound, and urodynamics and any other clinical procedures required), advance knowledge of medical terminology, providing clerical and administrative support, ; sterilization of instruments; notifying physician of test results.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: High levels of energy and stamina are needed to cope with the demands of a rigorous job. The incumbent must be able to work for sustained periods under pressure. Heavy clinics will occasionally require long hours under hectic conditions with no regular break. The ability to be flexible with regards to patient's needs is critical. Good strength and well-developed musculoskeletal function are necessary for occasional lifting and positioning or transfer of patients who are sedated. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies. Highly refined dexterity is necessary to handle demands of highly sophisticated procedures and equipment. Excellent visual skills are necessary for evaluation of clinical status of patients and adequacy of small biopsy specimens. There must be a high degree of eye-hand coordination and the ability to assist in lifting or transporting the patient when the need arises. A high degree of care is necessary in working with equipment which presents shock hazard or possible sticks or laceration.
