Duties

This position serves as a Park Ranger for the Color Country District. Works with the public to provide information concerning public land uses, travel routes, and site use opportunities and limitations. Utilizes the RAPTOR App to Administer Special Recreation Permits (SRP), including issuance of permits, renewals, monitoring, collection of fees and permit compliance. Evaluates visitor use patterns, prepares, and maintains recreation sites, and monitors condition of sites. Inventory, install and maintain various types of signage on public lands, such as off-road vehicle, boundary, directional and interpretive signage. Performs maintenance and monitoring of off-highway vehicle use areas and designated trail systems. Conducts Wilderness Study Area and dispersed recreation site management. Perform duties such as facility maintenance/repair, litter removal, hauling, routine trail maintenance, toilet cleaning, and basic carpentry. Applies thorough, specific knowledge of agency policies, objectives, and operating methods related to the functional area. Oversees fee collection activities, maintain fee accounting record, and transferring funds for deposit.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. To qualify at the GS-5 level you must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: working in as a park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. -OR- Education: To qualify based on education you must have 4-year course study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. To qualify at the GS-7 level you must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of recreation areas or similar operations; reviewing and applying recreational policy, regulatory compliance and application related to inspection and processing of permits, compliance monitoring, and completing a variety of recreation related projects; developing and/or implementing travel management planning; facilitating and organizing work projects for employees and volunteers; and speaking to groups. -OR- Education: To qualify based on education you must have 18 semester hours of graduate-level education in a directly related field. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
