This position is located in the Audiology and Speech Pathology (A&SP) Section of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem Virginia. The position falls under the direction of the Chief of A&SP Section and the Chief of PM&RS. The Staff Audiologist will conduct audiological assessments, balance assessments, auditory evoked potential assessments, and hearing aid services at the Salem VAMC.

Duties

DUTIES: Administers audiological assessments and compensation and pension evaluations and provides an expert opinion regarding etiology of auditory dysfunctions as needed Evaluates the type and degree of hearing loss for patients who are normally unable to provide consistent and reliable reaction to diagnostics Administers the full range of tests including auditory evoked potentials, otoacoustic emissions, tinnitus assessments,balance assessments, and videonystagmography. Identifies and evaluates individuals with hearing disorders in the reception and perception of speech, language, and otheracoustic signals. Develops treatment plans for most difficult and complex cases Recommends aural rehabilitation programs for patients with significant physical and psychological complicating conditions. Evaluates for tinnitus treatment programs and performs tinnitus treatment. Issues hearing aids and assistive listening devices and uses appropriate verification measures to ensure proper fit. Incumbent functions as an independent practitioner for clinical responsibilities and is fully responsible for all clinical decisions under general oversight of the Section Chief Responsible for planning and carrying out the assignment, resolving most of the conflicts that arise, coordinating the work of technicians as needed. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Licensure: The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia Education and Experience: Completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS12: Staff A/S-LPs at this grade level must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodology of the practices of audiology to a wide range of populations. [Individuals may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial (less than 25% of the time). Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the basic requirements, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures sufficiently to perform clinical services independently Ability to conduct assessments, provide treatment interventions; and provide consultation to other health care professionals Knowledge of contemporary audiology practices; and Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice. Preferred Experience: Experience with Advanced Amplification Technology and Exlectrophysiological Assessment and Interpretation; Experience with TeleAudiology; Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders.
