About the position:
This position will be assigned to the Maintenance Department at University Inn Lodging on Maxwell/Gunter AFB, Alabama.
This position is a Regular Part-Time position. You are guaranteed 20 hours, however you could work up to 40 hours per week.
Duties
Purpose of this position is to perform general maintenance duties for the lodging operation. Incumbent may also be required to lead federal inmates in the performance of general maintenance duties.
Physical effort: Physically able to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds and be able to occasionally lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Able to actively bend, stoop, stand, reach, and work in awkward positions.
The following are duties you may be required to accomplish but it is not all inclusive:
Electrical: Checks for proper insulation and causes of malfunctions in equipment. Repair or replace minor equipment that is not in safe operating condition. Installs fuses, switches, light bulbs and outlets. Replaces old motors, garbage disposals, fans and lights. Responsible for replacing bulbs and florescent fixtures and ceiling fans.
Plumbing: Performs minor routine maintenance; unstopping urinals, sinks and commodes. Repairs water lines, hookups to install sinks, drain traps and faucets. Makes a variety of minor plumbing repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts such as dirty traps, broken pipes, leaky or stopped up drains. Caulks and scale elbow and union joints, tiles or pipes, faucets and shower drains. Properly installs new equipment by hooking up to existing systems following accepted trade practice.
Carpentry: Repairs and installs cabinets, door closers and latches, suspended ceilings, baseboard, floor and ceiling tiles. Installs interior/exterior trim, window screens, replace damaged wood, etc. Interprets specifications with sketches or easily understood blueprints and technical instructions to plan and lay out the work.
- May be required to install door locks, knob-sets, dead-bolts, cylinder and cams.
- Spot checks and repairs holes in walls, damage due to leaks, wallpaper damage, etc. Repairs walls by replacing sheet rock and plaster damaged area to include mixing, application and finishing of plaster surface. Ensures paint in repair area matches rest of room. Prepares damaged area to ensure new plaster, tap, etc. will adhere to the surface. Determines appropriate tools required to include angle trowels, plaster hawk, brushes, sponges, etc. Responsible for repair or replacement of damaged floor tile replacing carpeting and repairing damaged walls in showers.
- Drives vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds to various locations both on and off base.

Requirements
- This position requires the incumbent to complete a background investigation with favorable results.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
- This position has been identified as a Test Designated Position (TDP). The incumbent of this position will be subject to and must consent to a pre-employment and random drug testing.
- This position has physical lifting requirement which requires the incumbent to complete a favorable pre-employment physical.

Qualifying Experience:
Must have experience that demonstrates the ability to perform minor plumbing, painting, electrical and carpentry duties. Experience could have been gained in any type position of "handyman" with duties in the area required. Must have a knowledge of proper tools used in the different areas of the maintenance section. Experience must have demonstrated ability to work independently, with little need for direct supervision.

Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
