This position is located at the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, AL.
Duties
The incumbent of this position serves as the Foreman for all interment operations at the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Motivates and promote the teamwork of subordinates to perform as an effective working unit. Incumbent will also perform outreach activities or represent the cemetery at station events and will perform other duties as assigned.
The incumbent will have comprehensive responsibilities for overseeing the daily operations of the cemetery. This requires extensive background and knowledge in field operations, financial management, personnel management, public relations, contract oversight, interments and running a National
Cemetery.
The incumbent directs the overall day-to-day interment operations of the cemetery, often performing significant periods of duty in an outside environment. Responsibilities includes overseeing the chain of custody for remains, interment schedule, preparation and closing of all graves, placement of temporary and permanent markers. The incumbent oversees the daily operation of the unit, ensures that agency policies and priorities are being followed, develops performance standards, and evaluates work performance of subordinates. The incumbent directs, leads and coaches subordinates and develops those supervised for more responsible positions. The incumbent gives advice, counsel, and instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters. The incumbent hears and resolves minor complaints from employees, refers group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to a higher-level supervisor or manager, effects disciplinary measures such as warnings and reprimands and recommends action in more serious cases.
Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,09/11/2023.
Your background must demonstrate work involved in supervising work pertaining to landscaping, grounds keeping, or other related trades experience that includes the use of hand tools and/or power tools, and the safe operation of related machinery and equipment used in cemetery caretaking practices, as described in the duties section of the announcement.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent is required to walk the grounds for extended periods, providing periodic assistance in using hand tools, operating equipment, and assisting in the lifting of materials weighing up to 240 pounds. Reviews and inspects equipment and structures, accessing some areas with use of ladders and occasionally entering confining spaces, as necessary. Moderate to heavy physical effort is needed.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in both an office setting and field setting with exposure to outside weather conditions. Incumbent is subjected to dirt, dust, mud, water, noise, and fumes from motors and/or exhaust. Incumbent may be exposed to high noise levels from operating equipment. Incumbent is exposed to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, wind, sun, snow, and ice. During the winter, ice, sleet, and snow presents a problem requiring removal. These extreme environmental conditions require special procedures and careful, prior planning. These inclement weather conditions also increase maintenance and repair work, e.g., roads deteriorate rapidly, and equipment maintenance is increased. Incumbent will wear appropriate safety clothing and protective equipment as required by regulation and procedure. Examples are hard hats, goggles, face shields, breathing masks, etc.
