Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing pre-trial and courtroom support for a wide variety of criminal trials. Typical work assignments will include: Organizing and managing criminal discovery materials for assigned cases. Providing case-related administrative support to attorneys and preparing legal/administrative documents in support of criminal investigations, prosecutions, appeals, and post-conviction litigation. Preparing master trial exhibits in electronic and hard copy, and work closely with Automated Litigation Support to prepare audio/video for courtroom presentations. Proofreading and providing basic editing assistance for legal documents such as appellate briefs, motion responses, search warrant affidavits and material witness warrants. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

Qualifications

GS-7 To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must have: at least one year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-5 level; or Education, or a Combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience Specialized experience is defined as experience working in a legal environment providing technical assistance to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities; organizing and managing case specific discovery; reviewing litigation support requirements to recommend appropriate strategies to meet litigation needs; using automated litigation support technology such as Trial Director, Case Map, Eclipse, or related programs to organize case information for retrieval, prepare computerized trial presentations, and index digital evidence; researching and summarizing relevant legal precedents; and preparing and maintaining a variety of trial-related documents. Education One full year of graduate education in a closely related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law). Combining Education and Experience Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. Superior Academic Achievement Possess a Bachelor's Degree or expect to complete the requirements for a Bachelor's degree within the next 9 months AND possess at least one of the following criteria: class standing in the upper third of the graduating class; an overall GPA of 3.0 OR at least a 3.0 based on courses completed during the final two full years of curriculum; a GPA of at least 3.5 based on the average of required courses completed in a major field OR based on the average of required courses completed during the final two years of curriculum; OR election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. GS-9 To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must have: at least one year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-7 level; or Education, or a Combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience Specialized experience is defined as experience assisting attorneys and legal support personnel with court rules, regulations and procedures, analyzing and evaluating legal decisions and case files to identify relevant issues and potential evidence; recommending automated support methods for trials; customizing databases and programs for user needs; assisting with trial preparation and presentations, and assisting attorneys with automatic evidence presentation in court; preparing motions, orders, pleadings, subpoenas and legal briefs, summaries of analyses and decisions, and pre-trial documents. Education One of the following types of education: J.D. or LL.B; a masters or equivalent graduate degree or higher; OR two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in law, criminal justice, public administration, business administration, or a closely related field that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of a Legal Administrative Specialist. Combination of Education and Experience A combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education when combined equal 100% of the requirements. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate hours that exceed 18 semester hours (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). To calculate your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. (Only graduate education in excess of the first full year may be used in this calculation). Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
