The Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) practices during the off tours as the "House Supervisor" for the Montana VA Health Care System and supports the mission and vision of the Health Care System.

Duties

The Montana VA Health System offers a wide variety of services for adult and elderly veteran patients. The NOD is responsible for supervision of all activities related to Patient Care Services during assigned shift including triage and nursing care of outpatients including telephone triage, coordination with other services to meet patient needs (i.e. lab, pharmacy, radiology), acting as liaison between other VA and non-VA facilities throughout the state and VISN during assigned shift regarding patient care or travel, assisting in provision of employee health, including completing paperwork for employee incidents, act as leave-granting official (overtime, comp, time, etc.), provide and amend (when needed) encounter information regarding nursing triage/ telephone triage, and prioritizing activities to assist with direct patient care when needed. Additional responsibilities may include providing in-services and staff development activities. The NOD is also in staffing and provides direct care for patients with various types of acute and chronic illness and, at times trauma, all requiring emergency attention. The nurse is able to recognize and effectively treat life threatening conditions and provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. This NOD possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting. In addition to general nursing care, this nurse must be able to assess and interpret data relating to the patient's current health status, which will facilitate the delivery of care. Based upon nursing standards and protocol, the ED initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment or patient condition shows adverse symptomatology. The NOD provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment , and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medication and treatments. The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group or community. (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). Based on education and experience, this nurse may be assigned to act as a preceptor. Additional duties include maintaining competencies and training required for the NOD position. This person may be requested to work as a staff RN on other units within the facility including Medical, Surgical and Behavioral Health. This nurse will be self-directed in completing orientation and on-going mandatory education, actively participating in annual competency assessment and validation. Must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Makes caring for the Veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work. This nurse will demonstrate a willingness to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction. This position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and turning. The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective care. The position requires the individual to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with the neck in a fully flexed or extended position and the ability to physically control or protect him/herself from physically abusive patients. This position requires the individual to travel in an automobile for several hours at a time.
