The Minneapolis VA Health Care System (VAHCS) is seeking an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to serve as a full-time inpatient provider for Surgical services. The APRN will be responsible for providing specialty care to veterans with perioperative health issues in the inpatient and short stay settings as well as in a virtual setting via VA-approved telemedicine platforms.

Duties

The Acute Care Surgical services APRN provides medical care to veterans with various surgical health issues and is a key contact for patients with general, otolaryngology, urologic, vascular medical/surgical management concerns outside of those addressed by the primary surgical service. The selected candidate will follow established guidelines, ethics, and policies and protocols of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and The Minneapolis VAMC. The Acute Care Surgical services APRN will functions as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire staff and reports directly to the Surgical Hospitalist MD for clinical issues, and to the specialty service line chief APRN administratively. In the medical center, care is provided across inpatient settings (SICU, inpatient, short stay, CLC). The APRN office is located adjacent to the inpatient settings to enhance communication and collaboration. Primary responsibilities of the Surgery Hospital APRN, NP include, but are not limited to: Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care of perioperative surgical patients across multiple surgical services. Initial screening, obtaining, and interpreting diagnostic testing related to the patient with acute medical/surgical issues. Medical co-management of the surgical patient from initial entry to the inpatient setting to the completion of treatment. Provides appropriate postoperative and medical services to all patients who are assigned to SCC Surgical Inpatient CNP. Consults with members of the surgical and medical staff regarding issues concerning the appropriate medical services to be provided to such patients. Consults and cooperates with the clinical departments to facilitate patient care management. Follows all existing referral patterns with respect to the referral of patients for specialist care. Uses currently accepted methods and practices of surgical care and medicine, adheres to applicable standards of care, medical ethics, policies, and protocols. Promotes and maintains a good working relationship with other members of the surgical and medical staff and employees. Assists hospital in attaining any goals established regarding patient, employee, and physician/APP satisfaction in connection with SCC NP Hospitalist's delivery of the services. Consults with quality manager to achieve better clinical outcomes for patients, improve the quality of patient care and maximize the efficient utilization of physician/midlevel and hospital recourses. Assists hospital with the appropriate medical assessment, treatment and timely discharge of patients admitted to hospital for observation. Reports to Surgery and Specialty Care service line leadership, on an as needed basis, material concerns about quality of care, delay in delivery of medical services to patients, or any patient concerns. Works diligently with primary care physician/provider for a seamless transition from hospital care to outpatient status with an accurate and timely discharge summary. Obtains and maintains all medical staff appointments and clinical privileges as required by the hospital. The SCC NP Hospitalist shall abide by and comply with all codes of ethics, rules, regulations, and procedures adopted or established, from time to time, by the hospital and all applicable governmental or licensing authorities. Complies with the requirements and standards of The Joint Commission and any other accrediting agencies designated as well as all applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Cooperates with hospital in implementing new procedures, controls, and systems to promote and facilitate quality, cost controls, reimbursement functions, standardization of products and equipment, and any other requests made by hospital. Provides effective and timely communications to referring or admitting surgeon and hospitalist physicians, patient and family concerning the clinical status of each cared for by the SCC Surgical Inpatient CNP. Promotes and maintains good public relations on behalf of hospital and assists hospital in attaining goals established regarding patient/employee/provider satisfaction in connection with delivery of clinical services. Promote overall wellness for the hospitalized patient, including non-pharmacologic treatment. Prescribe pharmaceuticals and therapeutic devices. Collaborate with other disciplines to provide concise, comprehensive delivery of care as well as to ensure positive healthcare outcomes and to promote wellness. Act as a consultant and resource to the VAMC staff and the community at large. Participate in quality improvement of Surgery ICC services as well as promote process improvement through innovation in the healthcare setting. Review incoming electronic consults to Surgical Hospitalist as assigned. Work Schedule: Wednesday - Saturday 0700-1700, Sunday - Wednesday 0700-1700 or Friday - Sunday 0600-1800 Virtual: This is not a virtual position.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Must be an Acute Care Adult/Geriatric CNP or provide evidence of acute care management of patients. Must have a master's degree or equivalent in education and experience, doctorate preferred. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting (up to 35 lbs); Moderate Carrying (15-35 lbs); Reaching Above Shoulder; Ability and dexterity of hand(s) to manage gross and fine motor tasks of patient care (i.e. IV insertion, wound care management, etc.); Walking Throughout Assigned Shift; Standing As Duties Require; Kneeling as Duties Require; Repeated Bending As Duties Require; Near Vision Correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far Vision Correctable in One Eye To 20/50 and to 20/100 In the Other; Color Vision; Hearing (aid permitted); and Specific Hearing Requirements.
