Duties
Utilize a variety of preparation methods and standardized recipes in his work assignments.
Fry foods in both shallow and deep fat, regulating heat controls to fry food to the proper degree of preparedness.
Carve and slice cooked meats for meal service according to the portion size that is authorized.
Prepare complex soups, gravies, and sauces and adjust seasonings to produce an acceptable product.
Slice, dice, or chop raw fruits, vegetables, and meats for use in recipes.
Assist other workers in the set-up of hot food serving lines by obtaining steam table pans and filling these pans with food for meal service.
Notify the Watch captain when he is running short of food being served so that products may be prepared to resupply serving areas before they are depleted.
Maintain work-stations and food serving areas in a sanitary state.
Assist and/or direct Food service workers in the cleaning and sanitizing of food preparation equipment, food holding equipment, serving carts, and adjacent floors and work surfaces.
Assist with serving meals during times of need.
Assignments by the Department Head not otherwise specified above.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 52?lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Cook ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex food preparation duties. I am skilled in the methods, practices, and procedures used in commercial food preparation and can judge when products have reached the desired appearance, taste, and aroma. I can plan, coordinate, and execute a sequence of steps required to insure that all menu items assigned are ready for meal service at the same time without overcooking or waste. Physical Effort: The incumbent will routinely be required to lift up to 52 pounds, utility carts and hand trucks are frequently used, but heavy exertion may be required at intervals. The work performed will require stooping, bending, standing, and walking for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: The incumbent may be exposed to cuts, bruises, and burns from sharp hand tools and galley machinery. There is danger from slipping on freshly mopped floors and on spilled food and beverages. Work areas are often uncomfortably warm and noisy. Some workers are exposed o temperature extremes when going into walk-in refrigerators from hot kitchens. There is danger of burns from caustic cleaning chemicals.
