This position will be assigned to the Maintenance and Repair section at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center. Primary functions include troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, modifying, installing, testing, & inspecting all electrical devices, systems, components, and other electrical equipment.

Duties

Duties Include: Reference, interpret and apply the NFPA 70 National Electrical Code to verify, install, inspect or alter electrical distribution systems. Install and modify new conduit systems to include bending various conduit types, threading rigid conduit and familiar with associated fitting types and uses. Troubleshoot electrical equipment and systems; using electrical theory to safely discover and resolve electrical issues. Knowledgeable with NEC National electrical code grounding methods and applications to maintain personnel safety. Troubleshoot complex equipment and controls using meters, tracers, and testers to locate and resolve control circuitry issues; eg. variable frequency drives, lighting control panels, low voltage control systems, fire alarm equipment. Read, interpret, and follow construction blueprints, schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, repair manuals, to discover, repair, resolve electrical problems. Planning, laying out, and installing electrical equipment and power distribution systems; installing panels, breakers, wiring, disconnects, and associated controls. Use computers to research, send emails, create/edit spreadsheets, and input data. Layout jobs, order materials, maintain/organize parts inventory in a shop environment. Demonstrated customer service skills in proper and professional communication with customers and supervisors in daily working environment. Experienced troubleshooting electrical motors, able to determine overload ratings, and short circuit ratings for feed breakers based upon NFPA 70 and motor nameplate data Installing, wiring and troubleshooting motor variable frequency drives. Utilizing Lock out tag out in performance of work. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday. Primary shift is 8:00am to 4:30pm, other shifts may be required on a temporary basis. Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD01389A Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your background must demonstrate knowledge and experience in that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of an Electrician without more than normal supervision: Experience incudes, but is not limited to: Works from building plans, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings; plans and lays out the routing, placement, and arrangement of industrial or similarly complex systems, circuits, controls, and equipment; determines installations and repairs including such considerations as the types, sizes, gauges, and lay out of conduit, wiring, couplings, fittings, relays, controls, and distribution panels, and other electrical devices used in a variety of complete electrical systems and the best methods of installation and repair; completes installations, modifications, and repairs, and load and test systems, circuits, equipment, and controls with little or no supervisory review during the progress or upon completion of work; and work meets accepted trade standards, and is completed in a timely manner. NOTE: Your resume must support the description selected by detailed documentation of the duties you have performed, in positions you have held and/or training you have successfully completed. This is a Screen-Out Element. Failure to meet a minimum level will result in an ineligible rating. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, boom trucks, lifts, and cranes in hard-to-reach places. This requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The work requires frequently lifting and carrying of tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds and, less often, up to 40 pounds. Working Conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside. The employee is sometimes required to make repairs and installations in inclement weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, and greasy; on scaffolding, boom trucks, lifts, or cranes at heights of 30 feet or more; and in close quarters such as crawl spaces, above ceilings, tunnels, confined spaces and attics.
