This employee supports the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI.
Serves as an engineer with responsibility for developing project plans, designs, and specifications for the advancement and evaluation of new and complex equipment used in forest products research.

Duties
Plan specific objectives, milestones, and phases for engineering projects, and make needed innovations and modifications.
Develop engineering plans, designs, and specifications for the development and evaluation of new equipment
Adapt engineering guidelines and precedents and select commonly used approaches to overcome problems in areas such as physical science (i.e. fire, moisture and material durability) or measurement and instrumentation systems.
Design, development, specifications requirements, acceptance testing, and evaluation of new or modified technology, equipment, or systems
Coordinate and support design, test and evaluation of new technologies, operations, and controls
Resolve equipment failure or unsatisfactory performance problems.
Conduct engineering hardware integration studies.
Perform or direct surveys, market searches, laboratory and field tests, and investigations to secure engineering related data solutions
Use, apply, and develop technical methods, equations, and analyses to solve technical problems related to engineering.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Specialized Experience For GS-12:
At least one year equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in federal service which includes all of the following.
1. Coordinating test plans, test methodologies, analysis procedures, test schedules; execute tests including conducting and/or overseeing the performance of both destructive and nondestructive tests
2. Leading troubleshooting efforts in an engineering specialty field. Defines, designs, and develops new tools or modifies existing general-purpose tools to enhance safety and productivity.
3. Using a variety of computer software and data acquisition such as MATLAB, LabView, lmageJ, Excel, AutoCad and other computer programs and data acquisition
