This position is located in Pharmacy Service at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is responsible for assisting pharmacy management in providing and coordinating optimal pharmaceutical care activities in accordance with the department's mission, vision, and goals.

Duties

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Administrative/Supervisory Completes performance appraisals, recommendations for awards, and/or disciplinary actions for staff technicians. Resolves conflicts among Pharmacy Technicians in a constructive and fair manner. Assists in the interview process and selection of OGJ VAMC staff Pharmacy Technicians. Encourages Pharmacy Technicians to report actual and/or potential medication errors or adverse events and participates in quality improvement initiatives to promote patient safety. Responsible for approving and denying leave requests, including but not limited to annual and sick leave, for staff technicians ensuring proper coverage for all areas. Continuously analyzes and reassesses priorities, redirecting staff to ensure that workload demands are accomplished in the most effective, efficient, and economic manner possible. The incumbent must successfully and consistently demonstrate independent technical judgment without the need for readily available supervision. The incumbent assists the Pharmacist Supervisor in the planning and implementation of program development. The incumbent may be assigned or rotated to special assignments as determined by the immediate or higher-level supervisor. Prepares monthly work schedules and daily assignments in a manner that provides adequate coverage in each area. 2. Education/Training Participates in meetings, conferences, and training programs relevant to the development and maintenance of the Pharmacy Service. Continually evaluates OGJ VAMC Pharmacy Service for opportunities for improvement. Assists in coordinating new employees' on-boarding experience (new employee training and orientation). Responsible for implementing and documenting the training and expanding capabilities of Pharmacy Technicians. Identifies training needs and assists in preparing Pharmacy Service training materials. 3. Staffing Functions as a GS-06 or GS-7 Pharmacy Technician when the need arises. The incumbent may be required to fill in and cover for vacant shifts due to vacancies and/or scheduled or unscheduled leave. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Unit dose inpatient, sterile compounding, outpatient pharmacy, controlled substances, and non-VA prescription. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM with potential of covering weekends and mid-shift (11:30 AM - 8:00 PM). Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. A copy of your certification must be submitted with your application. Loss of Credential. An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/ registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/ registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment. For occupations which require an active credential (licensure/certification/registration) at all grade levels, at the discretion of the appointing official, an employee may be reassigned to another occupation for which he/she qualifies if a placement opportunity exists. For occupations which require an active credential (licensure/certification/registration) in assignments above the full-performance level only, at the discretion of the appointing official, an employee may remain at an appropriate lower grade level in the occupation when both of the following apply: the credential is not a requirement and a placement opportunity exists." May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements listed above, you must meet the following Grade Requirements. Grade Determinations: GS-8: Experience: One year experience at the next lower level (GS-07) and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level, which include: ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities; ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes; knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff; comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment; comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process; comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures; comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures; comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: *1. Knowledge of human resource management policies and procedures, and the ability to supervise various levels of pharmacy technicians and other technical personnel (for supervisory assignments). *2. Ability to apply management and leadership principles. 3. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. 4. Extensive working knowledge of the pharmacy operation. 5. Ability to assess staff needs and provide appropriate training. References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G28 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08. Physical Requirements: Considerable periods of standing, walking and pushing or pulling of carts are inherent in the position. Bending, stooping, lifting and carrying of relatively light to heavy objects (e.g., pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.) is necessary. Considerable periods of sitting and operating a computer terminal are also inherent to the position.
