About the Position: Performs the full range of mechanical work on heavy mobile equipment, automotive vehicles, and floating plant. Determines causes of mechanical operating problems, traces and locates defects, and makes repairs as needed. Works on floating plant, and directs movement of tow boat and barges to tie tow together, dock, and position for work. This position is has been designated as a Floating Plant Position and is located in Napoleon, MO.

Duties

Determine causes of mechanical operating problems, traces and locates defects, and makes repairs including the overhauling and rebuilding of diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines. Diagnose all types of failures in electrical systems. Diagnose and repair fuel system failures. Read and interpret the results of engine analyzer, vacuum and fuel pump testers, ignition timers, tachometers, ammeters, and ohmmeters to apply results. Adjust panel instruments, i.e., heat gauges, ammeters, oil pressure gauges, temperature gauges, etc to make repairs. Use technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides to make repairs and modifications. Fit and install parts such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders to specified and appropriate tolerances. Diagnose and repair all types of failure in electrical systems (12 and 24 volts DC and common single and multiply phase AC voltages) including ignition, lighting and power circuits using various devices and testing equipment. Performs electric and acetylene welding and brazing and acetylene cutting for repair work to land-stationed mechanical equipment such as bulldozers, draglines, trucks, etc., and towboats, launches, and barges. Makes changes or modifications according to specifications and guidelines. Spot check work during engine overhauling and/or repair prior to road testing equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random drug testing thereafter.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • A motor vehicle driver's license is required for this position.
  • Overnight travel is up to 50% annually for this position.

Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Sometimes works on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Does strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. The mechanic frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 or 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside, and on floating plant both land-stationed and during operations. When inside, frequently is exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, may sometimes work in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors or ground. Typically works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily or greasy. Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Often exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acid, fluids, and lubricants. To reduce the dangers and irritations from the above conditions, follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear of use, and may be worn of used for long periods. There is the ever present danger of drowning particularly when moving between the boat and the plant in tow. A life jacket is worn at all times when on deck. Welding involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches and heated materials, the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. There is discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, and flash shield or eye goggles.
