Duties
This position allows you to use your knowledge and experience to maintain, repair, make modifications and service heavy duty and mobile equipment. Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen the Department's ability to protect the homeland.
This position starts at a salary of $28.68 (WG-10, Step 1) to $33.40 (WG-10, Step 5) with promotion potential to $33.40 (WG-10 Step 5).
The Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic determines the cause of malfunctions and makes repairs, makes modifications to a variety of heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment. Duties and responsibilities include:
Making repairs to a full range of systems on heavy mobile equipment and vehicles
Determining the cause of mechanical operating problems by tracing and locating defects
Overhauling or rebuilding one or more systems on a wide range of vehicles or equipment, such as diesel, gasoline, and other types of internal combustion engines; automatic and non-automated transmissions; heavy duty drive line systems; and/or hydraulic utility systems and controls
Conducting functional and performance tests on completed work assignments
Qualifications
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WG-10 level, you must meet the screen out elements:
Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision
To meet the screen out elements, you should have experience performing the following duties:
Troubleshooting and repairing a variety of heavy-duty equipment and vehicle systems and components such as engines, transmission and gear reductions, trans-axles, drive line and rear axle assemblies, electrical and electronic systems, fuel injection systems, emission control systems, braking systems, hydraulic, pneumatic and various other major systems.
Identifying and replacing defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards.
Independently interpreting and applying manufacturer's repair manuals, schematics, diagnostic codes and safety manuals and be familiar with all the tools, equipment, and materials used by heavy mobile equipment mechanics.
Failure to meet these screen out elements will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you are evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills and abilities) in the following areas:
Knowledge of electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
Knowledge of types of testing equipment
Ability to troubleshoot, analyze and determine malfunctions and extent of repairs needed
Ability to interpret illustrations, specifications, diagrams and schematics
Ability to align and adjust parts and systems

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency waiver by meeting one or more of the following conditions:
Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government

Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment.
