Duties
You will splice copper conductor telephone and data cables up to 2100 pairs in size.
You will prepare all necessary splicing preparation work; including access to manholes, splice closure assembly, cable setup, pair and bundle arrangement, sheath preparation, closure sealing and conductor testing.
You will install, splice, test, and repair copper and fiber optic cables using manual, electronic and computerized test equipment.
You will perform installation, maintenance and repair on Main Distribution Frames (MDF) verticals, Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDF), Combined Distribution Frames (CDF) and protected subscriber terminals.
You will install, maintain and repair cable termination equipment, including distribution panels, protectors, terminal pedestals and associated cable hardware.
You will adjust, maintain, diagnose, calibrate, test and perform minor repair (circuit card replacement) of fiber optic and carrier transmission systems.
You will perform installation and maintenance on cable conduit systems, not inclusive of building internal distribution cables smaller than 75 pair.
You will interpret cable prints, maps, and charts to locate cables, terminals, manholes, and poles.
You will review and interpret plans, job specifications, and work orders to perform wire communications cable splicing work.
You will use geographic information systems (GIS) in conjunction with global positioning satellite (GPS) devices to determine the placement of outside plant communication cables (e.g., plant copper, fiber optic, control cables).
You will identify method of repair (e.g., removing damaged sections, restoring connections, splicing) for faulty communications cable.
You will troubleshoot the nature of cable operability issues (e.g., shorts, opens, crosses, grounds, splits) to determine the method of repair.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
- This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.
- This position is subject to recall of duty to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Installation, splicing/termination, repair and maintenance of copper conductor cable.
