About the Position: This is a developmental position. After meeting all training, performance and regulatory requirements, employee may be promoted to the target GS-07, Freight Rate Specialist, position.

Duties

Verify appropriate freight classification involving borderline, or alternative classifications. Verify classification of inbound carload shipments identified for transit storage reconditioning and possible reshipment at transit rates. Determine appropriate rates in the procurement of common or specialized carrier and other transportation services for nationwide movement of freight by modes of transportation such as rail, motor, commercial, etc. Determine routing on all shipments of motor (less-than-truckload), rail (less-than-carload), or air. Determine shipment eligibility for transit privileges. Determine whether tonnage obligated is still applicable, checking routing, closing transit accounts, recording savings, and answering inspection questions pertaining to settlements.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing transportation support functions such as consolidating shipments or coordinating destinations for shipments of goods; or reviewing and resolving discrepancies on transportation documents, such as tenders, bills of ladings, invoices; or identifying the need for special packing, loading, or handling, and coordinating arrangements for these needs with carriers or activity personnel.
