Duties

This position is aligned under the Architectural Shop, Facilities Management Division, at the Clement J. Zablocki Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI (695) - a 1a Complexity Level VHA Facility. The work involves assisting journey level Carpenters with construction, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials. Major Duties: The Helper assists the journey level Carpenter as assigned by performing the simpler and more routine duties of the carpentry trade, working with him/her, as instructed. The tasks include alterations and/or remodeling comprising of removing and installing partitions, additions to buildings, opening of walls for installation of doors and windows, cutting and setting concrete forms, laying out and cutting roof rafters and joists, laying out, fabricating and installing stairs. More specifically, the Helper assists the journey Carpenter in performing tasks such fabricating and installing Formica countertops and installing Formica coverings on walls; cutting, sanding, and planing lumber; forming specific moldings and forms as required; working on window locks, aprons and sills; installing and adjust storm door checks; installing floor tile, and plastic and metal wall tile; installing steel studding with floor and ceiling runner plates; installing lath for plastering; and installing and adjusting metal doors and frames. The Helper is required to learn the common and most typical tasks of the trade, such as reading basic blue prints, so that he/she can assist the journey level Carpenter, who reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, both common and complex. The Helper follows written and oral instructions from journey level Carpenters and/or Supervisor to cut lumber to size for ceiling and floor plates, studs, braces headers, framework for doors and windows, including headers and anchors. The Helper assists the journey level Carpenter in performing wall, floor, ceiling construction such as nail sheathing, building and siding; assisting in laying sub-flooring, hardwood flooring, hanging suspended ceilings. He/she also assists in installing ceiling tiles in existing suspended ceilings. The Helper assists with other carpentry work such as installing baseboards, moldings, picture frames, exterior and interior stairs, fabricate and install porches, repair composition shingle and built-up roof and/or rolled roofing which includes non-metal built-up gutters. Detailed instructions are provided on new assignments along with close supervision and detailed review. The simple, routine tasks are performed without much supervision after they are learned. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 7 AM-3:30 PM, may be required to be present to provide off-hours support for utility outages, maintenance and projects support, etc. This is not a virtual position and telework is not available. Physical Effort: The Carpenter Helper works in wood shops and at job sites. When working in a shop, he/she stands for extended periods while operating machines such as bench planers, saws, and drill presses. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. When at a job site, strenuous physical exe1tion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials such as sheets of plywood, framing members, and other building and construction materials. He/she uses manual or portable power tools for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. On-site work typically requires bending, stooping, crawling, and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops. Workers may lift and move materials up to 18 kilograms ( 40 pounds), unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Working Conditions: Some work is performed in shop areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. When working at job sites, workers may be exposed to weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. They are subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. Carpentry workers may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. They use protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
