Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for independently performing a variety of legal assistant duties pertaining to a variety of legal actions, requests or matters associated with financial litigation, demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of laws, regulations, procedures and requirements relating to financial litigation. Typical work assignments will include: Reviewing and analyzing claims for legal merit and compliance with the Federal Debt Collections Procedures Act; Investigating complicated financial assets and transactions and providing comparative analyses of information furnished by debtors; Interpreting and enforcing judgments in criminal cases and performing all functions to collect amounts imposed as a result of the prosecution of criminal cases; Obtaining and analyzing financial information on debtors to determine their present and future potential ability to pay; Initiating enforcement tools such as debtor interviews, exams, garnishments and writs of executions; Opening and maintaining debtor files; Examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas; Entering and tracking financial data in automated systems and spreadsheets; Preparing and presenting statistical data and reports; and Producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
  • Applicant must be able to type at least 40 WPM or more.

Qualifications

GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must meet the following condition as defined below. Specialized Experience: One full year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is defined as serving as the subject matter expert in the processes and procedures related to complex asset identification and debt collection activities. Examples of specialized experience include: working in a collection environment obtaining and analyzing financial information to determine ability to pay; initiating contact with debtors concerning payment of their obligations, their ability to pay, and negotiating written payment schedules to assure successful debt collection; utilizing enforcement tools such as debtor interviews, exams, garnishments or writs of executions; reviewing debtor financial asset information to prepare payment plans; reconciling payment transactions with records and documents and identifying and resolving inconsistencies; performing skip tracing; locating assets; preparing a variety of legal documents; and maintaining files. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
