Duties

This is a full-time clinical position involving the provision of Oncology/Hematology. These services will be rendered in a thoughtful and resource effective manner consistent both with VA policies and with the highest standards of medical care. Such activities include, but are not limited to, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness; basic procedures including biopsies, patient and family teaching, consulting, and collaborating with other health care providers; prescribing medications and adjunctive modalities; refers appropriately to other specialties as needed; provides care coordination between service lines; and communication with patients and/or their appropriate surrogates regarding findings and management plans. The incumbent must demonstrate leadership, strong clinical and physical assessment skills. Oncology/Hematology experience preferred but not required. The PA works in close collaboration with the Oncology/Hematology staff providers, which may include staff physicians, other Physician Assistants, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, and Oncology/Hematology nursing staff, along with other medical services clinical team members. The Scope of Practice is defined in applicable VA policies and determined by the PA and the collaborating MD(s) biannually. In addition to observance of federal, national, and local regulatory, policy, and accreditation requirements governing this Health Care System, this position encompasses the following examples of responsibilities. Coordinate and supervise the delivery of outpatient care for Oncology/Hematology patients including patient evaluation; treatment including biopsies, order appropriate medications, schedule follow-up as needed, appropriate referrals as needed. Serve as primary Oncology/Hematology provider for an independent panel of clinic patients after an initial training period. Perform new patient Oncology/Hematology consultation and return Oncology/Hematology visits and telephone follow up visits and collaborate with Oncology/Hematology staff. Establish a comprehensive plan of care based on clinical findings and standards of care. Establish mutual goals with patient/family. Prescribe medications based on patients' status, accepted scientific guidelines, prescriptive authority, and ongoing evaluation of therapies. Lead and direct others in Oncology/Hematology to assure access to and continuity of care across the VA continuum, between referral bases, and transitioning from inpatient/observation status toward outpatient follow-up care. Our Facility: The Fargo VA Health Care System is a Level 2 Medical Center and a member of the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 23. This facility combines a 39 bed medical facility along with a 38 bed Community Living Center (CLC) providing transitional care, both accredited by the Joint Commission. Fargo also has a Department of Veterans Affairs Benefits Office on campus, offering veterans the unique opportunity to obtain health care, benefits services, and Readjustment Counseling at one location. Due to the growing veteran population in our service area, ten Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) have been established. The Fargo Health Care System provides a wide spectrum of primary and tertiary acute and extended care inpatient and outpatient activities in an academic setting. The Fargo Health Care System has an active research program and has a successful affiliation with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. Physician Assistant Basic Requirements Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~ Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
