The Lead Radiology General Imaging / Dexa Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the General Imaging and Dexa (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) sub-sections of the Radiology Service. S/he works closely with the technologists, radiologists, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results, and patient satisfaction.

Duties

Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Recommends, coordinates, and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Ensures that the protocol manuals are up to date with appropriate information. Participates in the continual education program of the technologists, as well as other technologists through departmental in-services. Participates in the evaluation of new employees and of the radiology students from the San Francisco City College Diagnostic Radiologic Imaging Program. Identifies, distributes, and balances the patient workload and all other tasks among technologists in accordance with the established workflow, skill level and imaging specialization; and adjusts accomplish the workload in accordance with the established priorities to ensure the timely accomplishment of assigned tasks. Researches, learns, and applies a wide range of qualitative and/or quantitative methods to identify, assess, analyze, and improve the General Imaging and Dexa team effectiveness, efficiency, and work. Leads the General Imaging and Dexa team in assessing its strengths and weaknesses and provides leadership to the team in exploring alternatives and determining what improvements can be made. Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and develops the weekly schedule. Organizes staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations. Participates in quality improvement as directed, to ensure that the Radiology Service is in compliance with all performance measures established by the Radiology Service, Medical Center, Vision 21, VA Central Office, JCAHO, OSHA, SOARS, and Inspector General. Complies with the JCAHO "Patient Safety Goals", such goals include: (1) effective communication among caregivers, (2) accuracy of patient identification, and (3) elimination of wrong procedural site, wrong patient, and wrong procedure. Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refers others to the supervisors, such as formal grievances and appeals. Performs (a) General Imaging examinations and (d) Dexa examinations, which are typical bone density examinations of the spine, extremities, and body The incumbent performs quality radiographic images; positions patients in accordance with established protocols and procedures to ensure the demonstration of the anatomy of clinical interest; ensures all studies and images are labeled correctly; ensures all studies are correctly registered prior to performing the procedure, ensures all patient data are correctly entered in the Picture Archive Computer System (PAC's). Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to the patients, staff, and self. This is achieved using lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead lined walls and collimation. The technologist always assures compliance to radiation regulations and wears radiation dosimetry badges. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-10 Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. Functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the full performance level and below, providing input on performance, resolving daily workplace issues, and maintaining efficient workflow. Provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a general knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: i. Ability to provide technical oversight and assign personnel and tasks to be accomplished in a manner that assures completion of the workload utilizing the personnel to the greatest advantage thus providing the optimal level of patient care within the workday. ii. Ability to plan, direct, and distribute work assignments to DRTs at lower grade levels. iii. Skill in instructing and training DRTs on newly acquired equipment. iv. Ability to plan and project staffing needs. v. Skill to independently perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Physical Requirements: This position requires heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over, standing, bending, transferring. stooping, stretching, walking, pushing, or pulling without assistance from another patient care provider or significant other. Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (Lead Apron) for periods of time. A health examination must be successfully complete prior to this assignment and periodically thereafter as required by the Employee Health Clinic policy.
