This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Superintendent Capitol Building, Assistant Superintendent Client Services Division, Labor Branch. As a Baling Machine Operator on either the Day or Night Labor Branch, the incumbent performs a variety of functions, including sorting materials by recyclable grades, operating baling machines with capacities of one half to one-ton bales, operating a trash compactor to dispose of trash.
Duties
Baling Machine/Fork Lift Operation/RecyclingPerforms all aspects of standard baling equipment operation tasks that require numerous procedures and techniques. Also operates a Fork Lift with a lift capacity of less than 10,000 pounds and a height range of 168 inches to load recyclable materials. Chooses the methods and techniques to bale various types and grades of materials. Installs wrapping materials and bale banding wires into the pressure chamber. Transports full recycling trucks weighing more than 80 pounds into cart dumper and operates lever that dumps recyclable materials into the baling machine. Performs recycling duties by separating materials by removing bottles, cans, plastics, and other non-recyclable material by recyclable category grades to meet specifications. Reinforces the Capitol Building recycling programs by ensuring, where practical, materials that can be recycled are not disposed of as trash. Loads sorted materials into the feed hopper and into sealed compression chambers. Activates the sensors and compresses materials, and wraps and bands compressed materials together. Operates baling machines to compress materials by recyclable grades to specified sizes and weights. Uses a forklift to move completed bales from baling machines and places bales on skids to load on flatbed trucks with the forklift for transport. Conducts preventive maintenance on baling machine. Maintains conveyor handling equipment, baling chamber, and exit rollers. Cleans free of debris and trash. Routinely inspects equipment used, and reports any problems to the supervisor. Completes essential shipping documents indicating recyclable grades. Coordinates with contractors for disposition of materials at specified levels. Assists contractors with loading and disposition of bales of materials.Laborer/Custodial/Special EventsAssists with CVC and Capitol Building special events set-ups; including chairs, tables, cleaning, and decorating, as instructed. Performs custodial tasks including dusting, sweeping, mopping and buffing floors. Performs general laborer duties, including carrying and setting up scaffolding, assisting trades staff to carry materials and tools, maintain a clean work area, and restore area to a state of readiness for use. Performs Flag Detail on the Capitol Roof. Assists with snow and leaf or debris removal outside of the buildings as assigned. Keeps loading dock area clean and free of debris.
