This Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) is assigned as the supervisor of the SLVHCS Sleep Disorders Center under the supervision of the Chief of Pulmonary Department within the Medicine Service line. The employee is responsible for the day to day activities of the SLVHCS Sleep Center.

Duties

Major duties for the position include (but are not limited to): Monthly electrical checks on equipment Monthly RME compliance reports Quarterly check of Quality Assurance Tracking CEU/CME credits of sleep technologists and physicians Supervising the scoring technologists Performing appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments. Maintaining and updating Policies and Procedures and getting approval by Sleep Medicine Director. Assuring sleep center's compliance to AASM guidelines Maintaining a current AASM Reference Manual Maintaining and updating the AASM Practice Parameters as needed Maintaining sleep center policies in keeping with Joint Commission standards Adhering to Infection Control standards as stated in policy and procedure Monitoring Sleep Center staff's competencies Preparing the work schedule for all the sleep center personnel both technical and clerical Training sleep diagnostic staffs on proper CPRS documentation Assures that all CPRS documentation is completed by each technician prior to end of shift Possesses a working knowledge of billing and coding polices relative to sleep medicine Maintaining and processing all DME equipment and supplies Assisting with Home Sleep Testing when needed Maintaining skills in the operation of the sleep diagnostic and positive airway pressure devices used for titration Keeps the report templates working properly and makes changes as needed Coordinating with Human Resources for staff acquisition/performance appraisals and step increases Making requests of Product Review committee for new items required to meet AASM standards and SLVHCS required competencies Incumbent works directly with multiple departments including Bio-medical engineering, Logistics, Prosthetics and Office of Information and Technology, as well as vendor tech support teams to keep all sleep lab equipment functioning properly Regularly reviews new equipment and analyzes performance of current equipment to make equipment recommendations for the sleep lab. Sleep supervisor makes staff work assignments, completes performance reviews, and assures staff competency in clinical procedures Reviews workload and forecasts future demand to develop budget recommendations Incumbent also works with SLVHCS CPAP Clinic Supervisor in providing a Home Sleep Testing (HST) program for qualified candidates at the area Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCS) Assisting Sleep Medicine Director in organizing monthly Sleep Center staff meetings Supervisory Controls:(but are not limited to) Supervision is provided by the Respiratory Therapy manager, Administrative specialist, Administrative director or Administrative officer within the SLVHCS. It is expected that the incumbent receives very little guidance from more experienced staff members and requires little direct supervision by the supervisor or manager. Staff at this level is expected to be able to assist others and act as a resource for less experienced personnel. Incumbent plans and organizes work with general assistance from the Respiratory manager to learn how to organize and complete tasks, duty requirements and assignments and VHA standards or practice. Incumbent will refer non-routine and highly technical problems to the Respiratory manager, Biomedical or OIT personnel. The incumbent is responsible for reporting process delays, difficulties in meeting unit or area objectives, uncooperative employees/patients or difficulty in securing information from clinicians to the Respiratory manager. The incumbent routinely communicates with physicians, managers and other allied health professional staff using sound interpersonal skills and is constantly aware of the sensitive nature of information they access or manage. Works independently making decisions based on guidelines, precedents, algorithms and regulations and performs duties in such a manner that only minimal supervision is required. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Education and/or Experience Combination: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-10 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide the most complex polysomnography technician services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. 1. Advanced knowledge of the most complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques. *2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program. *3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. *4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. *5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions. Certification. Certification. Registration by the Board of Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as prolonged standing, bending over microscopes, reaching for supplies or materials, lifting moderately heavy items such as reagent packs and adequate dexterity to perform intricate procurement of specimens or analysis procedures. Physical characteristics and abilities such as distant and color vision, hearing, and specific agility and dexterity requirements.
