This is a developmental position, Sterile Processing Service Non-Critical Reusable Medical Equipment Technician. This GS-5 grade level Non-Critical RME Technician is a member of the nursing care team and assists Sterile Processing Service in the provision of Non-Critical reusable medical equipment reprocessing, receiving, distribution and maintenance of Non-Critical RME while maintaining aseptic technique and Infection Control Guidelines as determined by VAMHCS policy and VHA directive.
Duties
Major Duties include but are not limited too:
1) Cleaning, Disinfection of non-critical equipment in patient care areas
2) Stocking of needed SPS supplies.
3) Attends and Participates in educational offerings for department.
4) Reports any customer concerns or issues back to SPS Supervisor.
5) Transportation of SPS items throughout the VAMCHS
Storage and Distribution
Operates as a liaison for SPS to patient wards, clinical wards, procedure areas, the employee is required to effectively communicate accurate information to numerous professional personnel such as Nurses and Technicians, insuring that Non-Critical RME is available and ready for use at all times.
Selects the appropriate cleaning materials according equipment and manufacturer's instructions.
Performs daily housekeeping duties such as cleaning of storage bins and shelves to ensure environment of care is maintained.
Assists with the monitoring of temperature, humidity and air flows of sterile storage areas.
Decontamination
Receives a full range of Non-Critical reusable medical equipment from hospital wards, clinics and operating rooms.
Cleaning and disinfecting of Non-Critical RME (including but not limited to) such as, carts, bins/containers that are to be cleaned properly according to manufacturer's instructions, following Infection Control guidelines as they pertain to inspecting, collecting, and transporting of infectious RME.
Adheres to facility regulations regarding application and removal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Cleans and Decontaminates Non-Critical RME by determining the appropriate method for removing gross contamination by means of manual cleaning procedures. Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other containments by wiping, soaking, rinsing and scrubbing.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
Experience and/or Education
(1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
(2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS-05 (Developmental Level)
(a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level; or
(b) Education. Four academic years above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation or a Bachelor's degree.
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Basic knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
2. Basic knowledge of event-related packaging in regards to sterility.
3. Knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
Preferred Experience:
Knowledge of Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) used in clinic setting and nursing wards
Knowledge of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization methods
Knowledge of Universal Precautions and infection control principles
Understanding of medical terminology
Knowledge of surgical instruments

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5.
Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the position include work assignments with periods of standing, walking, pushing, lifting, bending, stretching. This position requires the ability to lift 25lbs. The incumbent may at times be required to climb up and down a step stool in the work area. Work days may be extended without notice by emergency RME requests from the operating room, clinics or nursing wards.
