About the Position: The duties are performed in the Combined Food Operations Department, Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB), WA. the NHB is part of the Puget Sound Military Health System (PSMHS) recently certified by the Defense Health Agency as a Military Health System market.

Duties
Prepare all types of meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, fruits, sauces, and gravies for regular and modified diet menus.
Prepare a variety of menu items using several different and complex methods of preparation such as cook/chill.
Use cooking methods include frying, roasting, broiling, boiling, baking and steaming.
Examine food for quality and freshness before preparation.
Expand and modify recipes according to the capacity of the equipment in the kitchen.
Provide instruction to lower grade cooks in food preparation principles and techniques, and on sanitation and safety practices.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance (Tier 3)or access for the duration of employment.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Required to be screened for applicable immunizations.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

(Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Cook ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the full range of cooking and food preparation activities. I am skilled to perform independently a full range of cooking to include compile orders for required ingredients and food items; prepare foods to order in a professional manner in a kitchen environment such as a small healthcare facility; operate powered/mechanical kitchen equipment (e.g., choppers, slicers, shredder, grinders, and mixers); and portion food according to nutritional standards. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection.

Physical Effort: Cooks at this grade level perform work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 18 kilograms (40 pounds) with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas which are well lighted but are often hot and noisy. The cooks are exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and to extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been recently mopped or where food has been spilled. They are subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, stoves, and hot grease and water.
