You will serve as a Biologist within the USDA, APHIS, WS and performs assignments involving project and program delivery, management, and administration with minimal supervision. The work is primarily concerned with wildlife damage management operations relating to the assessment, reduction, and/or elimination of problems associated with wild and/or feral animal species in urban, suburban, and rural environments.
Duties
The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Conducts integrated wildlife damage management activities where there is a demonstrated need.
Management techniques and/or methods include the recommendation or use of pesticides, controlled substances, pyrotechnics, firearms, binary explosives, and aversive agents.
May perform a variety of technical procedures including capture, restraint, chemical immobilization, marking, transport, euthanasia, and/or necropsy of wildlife.
May be required to take extensive training and recurrent training on wildlife damage, disease, recognition, control methods, and techniques.
Modifies or adapts established damage or disease control techniques as necessary to meet local conditions and address specific environmental, economic, or political considerations.
Assists cooperators in understanding of and compliance with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), Endangered Species Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, and other wildlife-related laws.
Gathers, compiles, evaluates, and presents data on damage or hazards caused by various wildlife species to cooperators, stakeholders, and colleagues.
Provides technical assistance to a variety of cooperators, along with conducting site visits or assessments to identify wildlife damage issues or threats.
May assist with research projects to increase knowledge of wildlife ecology and to develop or improve methods to reduce the risks of damage.
Requirements

- In order to perform the essential duties of this position, you must have the legal and physical ability to possess and discharge firearms.
- You must be able to pass a government background check and meet any additional requirements to carry and use firearms.
- A background check includes answering questions about where you have lived, worked, went to school, and any military history or police records.
- Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check).
- COLA- In addition to locality pay listed above, this duty location is eligible for COLA.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT:
0401: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement you will also need to meet the following:
FOR THE GS-07 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level) that demonstrates:
Knowledge of human-wildlife conflicts and principles of wildlife damage management.
Working knowledge of wildlife damage management techniques and methods related to habitat management, behavior modification, monitoring and surveillance, exclusion, dispersal, population management, and removal.
Skilled in the use of firearms, traps, snares, pesticides, immobilizing drugs, pyrotechnics, electronic harassment devices, and other non-lethal control tools.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to coordinate and promote program activities with interested and/or affected cooperators, stakeholders, organizations, or other groups and to prepare educational materials, required program reports, plans, and technical reports related to wildlife damage management.
OR
1 year of graduate-level education in one of the following degree fields: Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Ecology, or Wildlife Management.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement: To qualify based on superior academic achievement, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution AND 1) have a class standing in the upper third of the graduating class, 2) membership in a national scholastic honor society (excluding Freshman honor societies), or 3) must meet certain GPA requirements. GPA requirements: 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on official transcripts or as computed based on 4 years of education, or courses completed during the final 2 year of the curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required course completed in the major field or courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum (GPA will be rounded to one decimal place, e.g., 2.95 rounds to 3.0 and 2.94 rounds to 2.9).
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
FOR THE GS-09 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-07 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Skilled in interpreting and applying policies, regulations, laws, and ordinances that affect wildlife damage management operations and working within those guidelines.
Experience establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with other Federal, State, county and city government agencies, Tribes, corporations, educational or research institutions.
Ability to gather, organize, and analyze data using techniques and technologies such as telemetry, GPS, GIS, web-based systems for data entry and administrative processes, wildlife population census and surveys, and wildlife monitoring andsurveillance.
OR
2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in one of the following degree fields: Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Ecology, or Wildlife Management.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
