An opportunity exists for a part-time Periodontist, at the Edward Hines Jr., IL VA Medical Center and with Academic appointment at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL. Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay)

Duties

VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. The Periodontist Specialty dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of periodontal care including the ability to perform selected specialty services. Delivers periodontal dental treatment and supports oral health programs. Serves as a consultant to other dentists, dental hygienists, residents, and technical assistants involved in treating diseases of investing tissues. Instructs dental providers and technical assistants in preventive dental protocols and techniques. Major Duties: Periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions Soft and hard tissue defects around teeth and implants Tooth replacement with dental implants Interactions between oral and systemic diseases including problems of medically compromised patients. Bone defect repair and regeneration (which may extend into the maxillary sinus) Soft tissue respective procedures and periodontal plastic surgery Periodontal and peri-implant flap surgery procedures with or without concomitant osseous surgery Aesthetic and pre-prosthetic crown lengthening and pre-orthodontic surgery Atraumatic extraction and ridge preservation Regenerative and reconstructive periodontal surgical procedures including guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration Management of complications that may occur around oral implants Management and treatment planning with interdisciplinary engagement for complex cases Work Schedule: Part-time, Thursdays and Fridays, 15 hours per week in total, also to include coverage consisting of 2-3 weeks per year; Workdays may be negotiable, but desired days listed are based on current clinic accommodations and staff availability. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: Has completed an American Dental Association residency in Periodontics and has 3 or more years of professional practice clinical experience and board certified. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
