This Medical Technician position is in Pathology and Laboratory services at the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, located at the West Haven campus. This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Work in the central processing (CP) and/or anatomic pathology (AP) office performing specimen processing, referral lab send-outs and phlebotomy. Can be assigned to positions that are full time, part-time, weekends, rotating weekends and holidays. He/She may also work overtime as priorities demonstrate a need. Assures that delegated aspects of the AP Office and/or CP areas of the Laboratory function smoothly and without delay. Receives specimens submitted for clinical or pathologic examination and evaluates the acceptability of each specimen, documents discrepancies and resolves potential problems. Acknowledges specimens received from inside and outside locations in the LIS system, verifying pertinent information as detailed in the SOP. Accessions samples and properly processes all patient specimens that come into the CP and/or AP lab, including but not limited to, microbiology, virology, blood and body fluids, histology and cytology specimens. Using problem solving skills identifies and corrects any problem s arising with the received specimens. Handles relevant phone calls for the clinical and/or anatomic accessioning areas and where possible, resolves whatever issues precipitated the telephone call based upon his/her knowledge and experience. Utilize centrifuges, automated processors, automated histology equipment; refrigerators and freezers as well as recording maintenance data and temperature readings in the appropriate log/chart. The incumbent measures the volume of and/or weighs specimens as required. Working in the AP area using medical terminology knowledge identifies and separates specimens into appropriate grossing categories and organizes specimens into alternating pattern per SOP. Assure proper processing of tissue specimens, especially those requiring special handling (e.g. direct immunofluorescence, tissue submitted for frozen section or quantitative analysis). Accessions all cases received in AP into LIS system with careful attention to matching patient identification on the paperwork with patient identification in the system and prepare all cases for gross examination. Properly labels the specimen containers and paperwork and records specimens onto the appropriate logs. Accurately labels cassettes for the gross run in the proper format and color per SOP. Perform the functions of the Referral/Send-Out operations for either the clinical (CP) or anatomic lab (AP) which includes; coordinating the prompt and appropriate packaging and shipment of all specimens/tests to or from reference laboratories. For CP send-outs cooperate with the Resident Review Process by producing an accession list, locating the specimens, determining where the test should be sent and if it goes or does not need resident approval, and either prepares approved specimens for testing or cancels tests not approved in the computer and disposes of the specimens. Determines where and in what manner specimens will be sent out (per day of the week) and assembles mailing containers, packs specimen(s) in a biosafety container(s), labels with shipping company labels. For AP send-outs the incumbent mails selected cases to designated agencies when requested by a pathologist and maintains accurate records of pertinent information received and sent to the agency regarding surgical or autopsy material. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/18/2023. Basic Requirement: English Language Proficiency In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements(This is separate from your experience and is mandated by statutory and regulatory requirements.) For a GS-07 position, applicants must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06 level. Grade Determination: GS-7 Medical Technician SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal Service that has given you the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Medical Technician GS-7. Specialized experience includes: (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests involving pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical stages using perfected laboratory techniques in chemistry, hematology, coagulation and urinalysis and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a Medical Lab Technician. Experience should include collecting, categorizing, cataloging, storing, and maintaining specimen integrity; and calibrating, standardizing, and maintaining equipment and instruments. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Successful completion of one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) from an accredited institution with course work directly related to the work of this position (i.e. chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc.) may be substituted for the experience required. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR COMBINATION: Combination of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond 9 semester hours) and specialized experience that may be used to meet total experience requirements. This education must include courses directly related to the work of the position (as described above) and must have been obtained at an accredited college or university. NOTE: If you qualify by a combination, your experience must be detailed in your resume and transcripts are required. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires regular and recurrent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, lifting (no more than 25 lbs and bending to perform tests, obtain blood samples, obtain supplies and operate analyzers, requires regular computer data input, and microscopic evaluations Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with working in a clinical laboratory setting with regular or recurrent exposure to hazardous material such as blood and body fluids, flammable liquids, noxious fumes and electrical instruments. The employee must follow all laboratory safety procedures and use protective clothing inclusive of but not limited to: lab coats, gloves, and face shield/mask.
