About the Position: Working either in the field or on the reservation, performs the full range of tasks involved in the overhaul, maintenance, modification, and major repair of gasoline and diesel powered heavy duty mobile industrial equipment, vehicles and floating plant. For example: bulldozers, road graders, draglines, survey boats, cranes, 125 ton Floating Derrick (crane), and similar heavy construction and earth moving equipment. Assists mechanics aboard the Corps Dredge WHEELER.
Duties
Traces and locates defects and determines the nature and extent of repairs to heavy mobile equipment, vehicles and floating plant.
Repairs to electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic auxiliary systems, components, and controls.
Incumbent works either in the field or on the reservation.
Performs the full range of tasks involved in the overhaul, maintenance, modification, and major repair of gasoline and diesel powered heavy duty mobile industrial equipment, vehicles and floating plant.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Designated Drug Test Position
- Physical Examination required.
- One year probationary period required.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC ~ without more than normal supervision. Overhauling, rebuilding, and major repair of systems such as the following: (1) diesel, gasoline, diesel electric, diesel hydraulic, and other types of internal combustion engines; (2) automatic and non-automatic transmissions; (3) heavy duty drive line systems; (4) hydraulic utility systems and controls. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort - he work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Work is sometimes performed on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Does strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools.
Working Conditions - Work is performed inside and outside, subject to all types of weather conditions. There is frequent exposure to irritation and discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors or ground. Typically works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. There is also frequent exposure to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment; and danger to skin and eyes from acid, fluids, and lubricants. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment and protective clothing as required.
