This position operates shuttles used for transportation of patients between facilities throughout VA Palo Alto Health Care System.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Operation of shuttles used for Patient Transportation, including 35-45 passenger buses, and 16 passenger buses with wheelchair lifts.
Operation of gasoline and/or diesel powered and hybrid motor vehicles including passenger cars, station wagons, vans, pick-ups, and panel, stake or open bed trucks up to 2 1/2 ton capacity. Also operates cargo vans and trucks with up to and including live forward speeds and six driving wheels, and special purpose vehicles with equipment such as power takeoff, winches, power tail gates, lifts, etc. Also occasionally operate large trucks and tractor-trailer rigs with GVW of 26,001 pounds.
Operate the Next bus system; login into system, selecting the route to schedule, and login off system.
Maintains vehicles, both interior and exterior, in a clean and serviceable condition; inspects vehicles for such items as coolant or water, oil, gas, grease and battery liquids, and condition. Ensures that vehicle safety equipment and other operating equipment such as lights, signals, windshield wipers, are in good operating condition. Makes minor emergency repairs on the road such as changing tires and/or wheels when it is not practical or safe to obtain garage service.

Selective Placement Factor: Must have and maintain a current Class B state driver's license with Passenger endorsement and air brake certification issued by the state of California DMV.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Must be in good physical condition and pass the physical examination for Motor Vehicle Operations as required by federal regulations. Physical and mental coordination and concentration is required for starting, stopping, driving, turning, and otherwise safe operation of a motor vehicle. Physical effort is required to assist patients in entering and exiting vehicles.
