These are TERM positions located at Shenandoah National Park that will perform Trails work throughout the park. Open to the first 75 applicants or until 09/06/2023 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.

Duties

The primary purpose of these positions is to perform Project Work related to historic and non-historic Park Trails and Structures repair, maintenance, renew, and restore. Performing these trails laboring duties will require moderately heavy physical effort requiring the use of common hand tools and power equipment and will involve any or all of the following duties: Operate vehicles (up to 10,000 pounds) to transport personnel, materials, or equipment. Operate heavy power equipment such as chainsaws, leaf blowers, brush cutters, brush chippers and all types of hand and light power tools. Perform trail work including maintenance/repair/rehab of bridges, tread surfaces, rock walls, drainage control, etc. Cut trees, performs heavy vegetation management and cleans erosion control structures on wilderness and non-wilderness trails using axe, chainsaws, crosscut saws, power weeders, loppers, brush cutters, picks, mcleods, etc. Hike 8-10 miles daily into the backcountry while carrying loaded packs and gear to perform trail maintenance and rehabilitation work. It is anticipated that at least 2 positions will be filled/duty stationed at Park Headquarters near Luray, Virginia and at least 2 positions will be filled/duty stationed at Big Meadows area near mile-marker 51 on Skyline Drive. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. These are TERM positions. TERM positions (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action. POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents.
