The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System located in Cleveland, OH, is recruiting for a Student Trainee (Administrative) Pathway Intern. The Student Trainee will function within Medicine Service.
Duties
This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. Duties Include:
Receives and directs callers and visitors. Provides information about the organization, activities, forms and personnel. Receives and/or gives out forms and assists visitors and/or callers with the completion of forms or documents.
Files documents as needed. Reviews documents for accuracy before filing. Alerts management if there are persistent issues with receiving documentation that is incomplete or incorrect.
Receives, delivers, and collects incoming and outgoing mail or other documents. Processes material which requires special handling such as selecting most expeditious route for special or urgent delivery or handling; makes special trips to deliver mail, collects or distributes mail to several widely separated buildings or points; locates lost or delayed mail; and/or safeguards material in transit.
Performs clerical or technical program support work for a variety of technical and/or program specialists in support of the line programs of an agency.
Operates computer systems, and/or performs data processing support and service functions requiring knowledge of data processing sequences, procedures, user and/or programming languages, computer requirements, and/or techniques associated with the development and design of systems.
Performs work related to maintaining, purging, listing, and monitoring computer- generated files. Performs clear-cut, repetitive files maintenance work such as assigning file names, revising file characteristics, and making backup copies of stored files.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Interns may work full-time or part-time schedules Monday-Friday, but the student's work responsibilities should not interfere with the student's academic schedule.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/07/2023.
Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.
You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below:
General Experience: You must possess 3 months or 13 weeks of general experience. General experience is experience creditable at grade level GS-3 where the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to perform the duties of a position are not essential, but where an applicant can demonstrate in his or her past experience the ability to acquire the particular knowledge, skills and competencies. Examples of general experience include: Responding orally to inquiries or requests, following-up on requests or complaints, inputting data into a computer system, greeting visitors, formatting letters or documents, operating a computer, developing correspondences, operating office equipment, and receiving phone calls. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a High school diploma or GED diploma. OR,
Combination: You must possess a combination of general experience and education to qualify for the GS-3 Student Trainee. When combining education and experience to meet the minimum requirements, first determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the general experience required for the grade level. Next determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. To determine the minimum requirement, add the education percentage and experience percentage. The total percentage must equal or exceed 100 percent. No specialized experience is required at this grade level. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
