The Pharmacy Technician (PT) serves as a representative of the Pharmacy Service in a variety of positions throughout the Medical Center. The PT is a certified professional that performs technical support work in support of the pharmacy program under the direction of a registered pharmacist. The PT performs pharmacy program support functions for both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy areas.

VA Careers - Pharmacy: https://youtube.com/embed/Fn_ickNBEws Major duties and responsibilities include: Operations - Medication Stock and Storage Maintains adequate stock of pharmaceuticals and supplies for the areas assigned by communicating with the procurement personnel for items that are below par levels or out of stock. Monitors usage of medications, and par levels are adjusted accordingly. In addition, out of stock medications are communicated to the pharmacy supervisors and procurement staff at the time of discovery so that arrangements can be made to prevent delays in patient care. Maintains all pharmacy areas according to facility and service level policies (e.g., appropriate storage of high alert medications, proper disposal of corrugated cardboard, etc.). Thoroughly and consistently conducts assigned monthly ward inspections within established timeframe as assigned. Properly returns recalled drugs to Pharmacy Service, and segregates and secures them to prevent re-dispensing. Distribution - Medication Orders/Prescription Preparation

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-06 Pharmacy Technician: Experience. The candidate must have at least one year experience at the next lower level equivalent to the GS-05 grade level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. Physical Requirements: Duties may require sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, or kneeling for extended periods of time. Ability to lift/push/pull light loads (e.g., carts weighing 40 pounds or more). Ability to work in an environment that requires rapid mental and muscular coordination. Correctible to within usual range of vision, including the ability to discern color.
