About the Position: The Presidio of Monterey (POM) Fire Department is a progressive, two (2) company fire department located in Fort Ord Military Community in Seaside, CA.

Duties
Provide fire protection for a variety of structures and related areas.
Drive fire apparatus to scene of fire following predetermined routes or selected alternate routes when necessary.
Position vehicle considering factors such as wind direction, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, location of armaments on aircraft, etc.
Apply principles of hydraulics and determine proper pressures for hose lines to establish and maintain a constant water supply during firefighting operations.
Operate pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment.
Operate hose lines, ladders, hydrants in the control and extinguishing of fires.
Perform tests, minor maintenance, and repairs to ensure operational condition of equipment.
Respond to hazardous chemical spills, and assist in a full range of containment and runoff control duties.
Conduct rescue operations.
Conduct a complete examination of patients to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of the condition.
Operate alarm room equipment; including radio, fire alarm, and 911 telephone.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R (Condition of Employment for Certain Positions Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program).
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- An applicant not currently occupying a GS-0081 primary/rigorous position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
- Incumbent required to report for duty during natural disasters and other emergency situations. Must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations.
- Employees hired for the first time (original hire) into the GS-0081 position must not exceed the Maximum Entry Age (MEA) at time of appointment. The MEA for Firefighters is 37.
- GS-05 - There are certificates that are required to be considered at this grade, and additional certificates required prior to movement to the GS-06. Review under Qualifications.
- GS-06 - There are certificates that are required to be considered at this grade, and additional certificates required prior to movement to the GS-07. Review under Qualifications.

- Occasional Official duty travel (TDY) up to 10% may be required
- Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations.
- GS-4: There are additional certifications required prior to movement to the GS-05 which include Firefighter I and II; Hazardous Materials Awareness; Hazardous Materials Operations; Driver Operator Pumper; National Registered EMT or CA EMT.

For GS-04 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade and rescue operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
For the GS-05 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade, rescue operations and detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
For the GS-07 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; rescue operations; detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; operation of fire communications equipment; controlling hazardous materials incidents; and developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirements above, applicants must also possess the below certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND state or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable:

Time in Grade Requirement:
For GS-07 - Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
For GS-06 - Must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05)
For GS-05 - Must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04)
