The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the planning, managing, and administering of a comprehensive year round base fitness and sports program, providing basic and advanced activities.
Duties
Summary Cont'd: The fitness program includes, as a minimum, group exercise classes, incentive programs, special events for all customers and fitness improvement programs for military members not meeting Air Force fitness or weight standards. The sports program includes, as a minimum, self-directed and intramural sports. Functions as a recognized Air Force exercise specialist providing fitness intervention and strength conditioning training. As customers request and resources allow, provides enhanced fitness programs and enhanced sports programs, e.g., extramural and varsity sports.
Duties:
Plans, organizes, and assists in diverse and comprehensive physical fitness and sports programs which include group exercise classes, self-directed fitness and sports programs, including personal fitness training, incentive programs, special events, intramural, extramural, instructional and recreational programs.
Exercises limited supervisory personnel management responsibilities, less than 25% of the work year, over appropriated subordinate employees as an assistant to the supervisory Sports Specialist.
Implements, monitors, and is responsible for the administration of the personal training exercise program.
Provides budgetary input for equipment, supplies, sports officials and awards required to conduct the sports program.
Prepares publicity items, evaluates effectiveness of fitness and recreation programs and varies programs in light of findings. Assists in the overall recreational function.

- Incumbent is subject to work an uncommon tour of duty to meet program requirements including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- May be required to travel by military or conm1ercial aircraft when performing temporary duty (TDY).
- Requires the operation of personal or government vehicles. A valid driver's license is required.
- May require physical dexterity and ability, heavy physical exertion (lifting up to 50 pounds and over), and exposure to hazardous materials.
- To perform Air Force Exercise Specialist duties, must meet of eligibility criteria IAW AFI 34-266, Air Force Fitness and Sports Programs.
- Position requires knowledge of automated systems to perform limited typing as may be required.
- Must pass an initial pre-employment medical examination, periodic medical examinations, required physical fitness/physical agility tests, meet established hearing standards and discern colors, contrast, and depth.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Current and Prior Federal Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-05, or equivalent in other pay systems. External Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes includes knowledge gained through relevant experience that enables the employee to competently and independently carry out continuing recreation and sports projects of programs through proper application of the principles, concepts, and techniques of recreation and fitness to the youth activities programs. Knowledge of the range of activities, sports, and services of participant interests and needs, and of the methods and processes involved in a typical and conventional youth activities program, which enables the employee to plan and conduct a variety of youth recreation activities, sports, and fitness services.

EDUCATION: One full year of graduate education with courses related to recreation or physical education such as Sports Management or Sports Science. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education) that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. Current and Prior Federal Applicants: One year at the GS-05 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. External Applicants: One year at the GS-06 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level.TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of physical fitness and sports programs including knowledge of exercise science, strength conditioning, nutrition, weight loss/control, cardiovascular endurance, and exercise prescription; of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology as related to exercise and physical fitness; assessment principles and procedures, exercise testing equipment, m1d physical and psychological factors of individual and team sports.
Knowledge of program and facilities management, safety, fire, and environmental regulations, practices, and procedures.
Knowledge gained through relevant experience which enables the employee to competently and independently can-y out continuing recreational projects or programs through the proper application of the principles, concepts, and techniques of recreation to the specific needs of the community to be served and in light of the natural environment involved. Knowledge of the activities and services involved in a typical recreational program and of the practices and procedures of sound natural resources management and utilization. This knowledge enables the employee to develop and conduct a recreation program that not only supports and meets the basic program requirements, but that provides a range of enhanced program activities which properly utilizes and are in harmony with the environment.
Skill and ability to relate to people and communicating effectively with others both orally and in writing to promote and report on the program, and to resolve problems and answer questions relating to the program.
Ability to perform and conduct training on performing individual health risk appraisals, comprehensive fitness assessments, and proper exercise techniques for cardiovascular and resistance equipment.
Ability to plan along creative or original lines and to motivate, appraise, and work with supervisors and non?supervisory employees who have a variety of fitness and sports backgrounds; and to plan and conduct a variety of programs.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
