The Nurse Manager of Geriatrics Extended Care (GEC), functions as the leader for the coordination of quality improvement and educational needs across all Community Living Centers (CLC), and the Community Health Nursing Programs as delegated by the Chief Nurse Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC). The nurse provides leadership in improving patient care, maintaining standards of care, and directing and teaching other personnel in a variety of settings.

Duties

The Nurse Manager (GEC) is responsible for ensuring positive outcomes of Long-Term Care resident's programs and projects assigned by the Chief Nurse Geriatrics and Extended Care. This role will perform onsite reviews regarding quality issues and then evaluate these reviews with the Geriatric Extended Care Leadership. Other responsibilities include reviewing administrative claims and data, gathering and compiling quality improvement reports, developing and implementing corrective action plans, recommending improvements to Geriatric Extended Care Leadership, and developing data outcome reports. Is adept at consideration of patient's developmental stage, which may be anywhere on the continuum of young adult to geriatric. He/she is responsible for the supervision and accountability to his/her nursing staff for providing the guidance needed to maximize effective and efficient patient care. The incumbent ensures compliance with the Joint Commission, The Long-Term Care Institute, OSHA and other regulatory agency standards. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Leadership experience in designated field preferred. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include but are not limited to the incumbent may experience long periods of standing, sitting, walking, bending, pushing and pulling. Lifting is required though mechanical lifting equipment and/or other approved patient handling aids are used to prevent the manual lifting and handling of patients/residents except when necessary, such as in a medical emergency. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The work requires long periods of standing and walking. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50Ibs. Patient mental status and physical habitus will require the incumbent to be able to assist patients during transfer that is required of examinations. Specific vision abilities required by this job function include but are not limited are close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Mental/Emotional Requirements: The incumbent of this position will be expected to understand, remember, and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information; understand, remember, and communicate routine, factual information; understand complex problems and to collaborate and explore alternative solutions; understand opposing points of view on highly complex issues and to negotiate and integrate different viewpoints; organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology; organize and prioritize own work schedule on short-term basis (longer than one month); count accurately; add, subtract, multiply, divide and to record, balance, and check results for accuracy; compute, analyze, and interpret numerical data for reporting purposes; compute, analyze, and interpret complex statistical data and/or to develop forecasts and computer models; understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines. Work Environment: The incumbent is in a typical office setting where patients receive medical and mental health treatment. There is a possibility of physical harm and safety precautions are necessary. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms. The work area is adequately lighted, heated,and ventilated. Special correct ergonomic precautions must be taken with sitting and typing and can be requested through the appropriate processes. Since work requires a high level of interaction with patients near clinic care areas employees may be exposed to communicable diseases/viruses. Additionally, incumbent is at times confronted by angry patients or family members so special violence prevention in the workplace safety precautions are necessary and sometimes necessitates obtaining police assistance for patients in crises.
