About the Position: Serves as the Master, Tender of diesel-powered towboats that are used to tend the floating plant in the fleet, assemble tows, move crane barges, and push tows in support of the Dredge Potter and its mission.

Duties

Maintain daily log(s) of vessel operations. Prepare accurate service records for vessel maintenance. Replenish fuels, lubricants, and/or other supplies on the vessel. Operate small towing vessels and/or a large crew boat. Operate and/or inspect vessels in accordance with US Coast Guard regulations.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must maintain a current U.S. Coast Guard License Master as Towing Vessels for the inland river(s) or Portion(s) of the waterway on which the vessel is operated.
• Must be able to obtain a 100-ton Master boat operator's permit as needed.
• Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
• Pre-employment physical required.
• During lay-up periods from dredging operations may be utilized and assigned to other essential work in the District.
• This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
• Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.

Physical effort is required in performing mechanical repairs. On occasion, may be required to lift equipment or items weighing over 40 pounds to complete tasks. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside and is subject to drafts and variable temperatures. Cabin is moderately noisy from engine. Work is dirty and greasy when making adjustments and repairs to engines or equipment and operator is subject to greater noise levels and other chemical substances when completing these tasks. Hazards include occasional danger of falling overboard, drowning, falls on slippery decks or in climbing steep stairways, and injury from moving machinery. The incumbent is subject to hazards of heavy river traffic at night and during foggy weather.
