Duties
SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Assist the social service program in providing services provided by the Branch of Human Services, reviews applications for intake for services, including General Assistance, Burial Assistance, Emergency Assistance, Child Assistance, Adult Care IIM Services, and Services to Children and Families.
Greets clients and provides information or assistance to ensure their application for services are complete.
Acts as receptionist for Branch in answering incoming telephone calls and refers to the appropriate staff.
Pulls case files and other pertinent records or materials needed by the Social Services Supervisor.
Establishes and maintains case records and other office files.
Researches and gathers facts for technical and statistical reports.
Enters and retrieves data to and from established automated data systems and programs.
Maintains and procures office supplies and services, prepares requisitions and purchase requests, reviews invoices an verifies charges.
Composes and types on own initiative, routine letters of correspondence with grammatical correctness, punctuation, and spelling from rough draft to final form.
Handles all incoming and outgoing mail, including picking up, opening incoming mail, date stamping, determining proper distribution, and retaining matters of a routine nature for personal handling.
Examines outgoing mail for corrections, signatures, proper assembly, enclosures, and attachments.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for Technical and Medical Support Positions, and Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-0186: Social Services Aid and Assistant Series).
Individual Occupational Requirements
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above)
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-5: In addition to the basic requirement, I have at least one year of full-time specialized experience or the equivalent, comparable to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal Service (obtained in either the public or private sector). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs. Counselor in a youth summer camp. Instructor in a training program for the development of job skills. Work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew. Group activities leader in the Armed Services. Unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility. Aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), employment guidance in a vocational or academic institution, social service, or manpower development. Aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities. Aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs.

EDUCATION: Four (4) years of successful completion of a full course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that (a) included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or health care; (c) was supplemented by experience in activities that afforded the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills required by the position. (The supplementary experience may have been gained, for example, in part-time or summer employment, in volunteer social welfare or recreation programs, or in community organizations.).
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the position to be filled.

If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education which shows the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
