This position serves as the Operations Supervisor for Engineering Service, at the Alexandria VA Health Care System (AVAHCS) in Alexandria, LA, with responsibility for the engineering Operations. Engineering Operations Section provides direction and oversight of AVAHCS's Boiler Plant, Chiller Plant, and utility systems.

Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Performs full administrative and managerial responsibilities for planning, staffing, budgeting, developing and effectively managing the facility utility systems in accordance with goals/objectives set forth by the Chief, Engineering Service. Initiates, molds and sets policy, procedures, standards and goals for the Engineering Program. Develops and applies an internal program of management review, appraisal, and improvement. Establishes priorities which recognize and incorporate budget and manpower constraints. Provides for formal and on-the-job training and instruction for the staff. Coordinates engineering activities with other administrative and clinical Service Lines in the medical center. Advises Engineering Leadership daily of any problems with major critical equipment, overtime needs, or problems with resource acquisition or allocation. Performs pre technical reviews of utility systems equipment; has responsibility for site preparation cost estimates, equipment space and utility's needs, and ensuring compatibility with existing equipment. Maintains close liaison with other departmental executives and with discipline-specific leadership. Conducts and directs special studies and analyses of complex problems relating to equipment utilization, organizational alignment, and other areas of concern to Facility Leadership. Develops solutions and resolves departmental problems, following the overall policies and regulations of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Maintains constant surveillance of Engineering compliance with standards of the Joint Commission and other accrediting and regulatory agencies. Ensures and maintains safety and compliance within the boiler and chiller plants. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Heavy lifting (45 pounds and over), heavy carrying (45 pounds and over), straight pulling (1 hour), pulling hand over hand (1 hour), pushing (1 hour), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (4 hours), standing (4 hours), crawling, kneeling (.5 hours), repeated bending (1 hours), climbing, legs only (1 hours), climbing, use of legs and arms, both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, specific visual requirement (20/50), ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted), specific hearing requirement (able to hear alarms and warning shouts), emotional/mental stability under stress, ability to wear respirator, ability to work at heights or in elevated environments, ability to wear safety shoes. Environmental Factors: Outside in inside, excessing heat and cold, excessive humidity, excessive noise, (intermittent), constant noise, dust, fumes, smoke, or gases, solvents (degreasing agents), grease and oils, electrical energy, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around machinery with moving parts, working on ladders or scaffolding, vibration, working closely with others, working alone, protracted or irregular hours of work, working in confide spaces.
