The Medical Technician functions in technical and advanced technical capacities in Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing for the Clinical Laboratory. The employee carries out duties in phlebotomy and specimen processing and responds to the Blood Bank and Ancillary Testing Supervisors.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:
Receiving patients for medical laboratory testing collects specimens and evaluating tests for processing determination.
Making adjustments to equipment for laboratory testing, setting up all necessary accessories and supplies, ensuring proper cleaning, and performing minor maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Performing patient care procedures, collecting laboratory specimens, and collecting and handling various specimens including venous blood.
Collecting blood samples by venipuncture and accurately labeling all blood tubes and other collection containers.
Instructing patients on proper specimen collection procedures to ensure specimens are acceptable for testing.
Collecting type and crossmatch specimens verifying the patient's identity, accurately completing the required forms, ensuring proper collector identification on tube(s) and all forms, ensuring proper identification of second verifier, and properly arm-banding the patient.
Ensuring the proper specimen was collected, recording in send-out book, putting specimen in the proper receptacle, packaging specimen to maintain the correct temperature during shipping, completing and checking paperwork, and sending specimen to outside laboratories.
Receiving, validating, processing, and distributing specimens to the proper laboratory section for testing.
Answering telephone calls and coordinating information and actions relating to patient care and services.
Following proper infectious disease controls by following Standard Precautions and using correct Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE).
Performing other duties as required.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm with rotating holidays and weekends.

Qualifications
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-6 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess at least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.
Additional specialized experience performing blood draws on human patients; performing a broad range of waived tests including finger-stick based testing; documenting and processing specimens obtained; performing preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment; performing all aspects of sample storage and packaging. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed one-half year (9 semester hours) of graduate level education in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Education cannot be credited without documentation. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION.)

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as described above, to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-6 level. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The physical demands are primarily standing and walking, but also some bending, lifting, and carrying of light items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work environment involves regular and recurrent exposure to moderate risks or discomforts typically associated with performing phlebotomy on patients, requiring special safety precautions.
