These positions are located in BLM Oregon State Office, Burns District and is responsible for assisting in all phases of facility operations including animal preparation, daily feeding and care, private care placement and adoption compliance, facility maintenance, and public outreach.

Duties

This position is located at Oregon's Wild Horse Corral Facility on Burns District, outside of Hines, OR. The corral facility houses up to 1,200 animals and services private care placement events in Oregon and Washington, as well as national private care placement platforms. This position is responsible for assisting in all phases of facility operations including animal preparation, daily feeding and care, private care placement and adoption compliance, facility maintenance, and public outreach. These duties require expert knowledge of animal husbandry practices, the ability to operate 4x4 tractors and loaders, the ability to ride horseback and rope and restrain wild horses, the ability to identify animals by color and markings, and effective communication skills.

Qualifications

There is no required length of time of qualifying experience or training. However, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to support the SCREEN-OUT Element of: Your ability to perform the duties of a Horse Wrangler without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) Riding horseback to gather, rope, herd, separate, coral, etc., Wild Horse & Burro (WH&B) for various tasks related to their management (i.e., gather operations, safe handling and transportation); (2) Ensuring WH&B are handled safely to avoid injuries to animals and/or other workers; and (3) Operating up to 36 feet horse trailers (e.g., gooseneck and bumper pull) and/or other similar length trailers and dump, stake, water, platform trucks and/or other motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 lbs. and up to 32,000 lbs., to load, haul, and transport WH&B, supplies, materials and equipment. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN-OUT Element above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Physical Demands: Work related to WH&B requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion to handle, ride (e.g. full gallop), rope, maneuver and restrain domesticated horses and wild horses and burros up to 1,500 pounds. ? Work involves physical exertion and agility while performing duties such as heavy lifting (i.e., hay bales weighing in excess of 100 pounds, unloading and carrying portable panels, steel fence posts, jute, other materials and equipment), bending, walking, standing, operating of trucks, coupling and uncoupling of trailers and working with other equipment (e.g., torches for welding). Working Conditions: Working with WH&B inherently includes hazards and dangers while riding, pursuing, roping, corralling, counting, loading, handling and caring for wild animals where conditions cannot always be controlled. Hazards and dangers consist of being kicked, scratched, bitten, falling or being run over. Driving vehicles and hauling WH&B requires safe operation for on highways, in facilities, off road and rough road terrain in all weather conditions. Welding involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiations, heat, flying sparks and the possibility of eye injury and burns. Welding also includes work in awkward or cramped positions to get to hard to reach places. Proper safety equipment will be worn to minimize risks. Work will be outside in HMA's, corrals, and other areas in all conditions (i.e., dusty, rainy, snowy, humid) and temperatures (i.e., over 100 degrees F, below zero temperatures). There are risks related to slippery, muddy, frozen, uneven and rocky ground. May be required to work irregular work schedules, weekends and holidays.
