About the Position: Fort Drum is located in Northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Repair, overhaul, and rebuild major assemblies, systems, i.e., engine, transmissions, drive line, hydraulic lifting, and positioning systems. Perform inspection of final work product by testing or operating equipment to ensure proper operation. Troubleshoot, inspect, test, diagnose and perform major repairs, overhaul and maintenance of a variety of powered support equipment such as generators, compressors, etc. Diagnose using test equipment and by visual examination. Inspect equipment to determine repair or replacement needs. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment. Drive trucks with up to and including 1 ton capacity for transportation to/from worksites.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent of this position must submit to a pre-employment drug screening and random testing thereafter.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Incumbent may be required to serve as a member of the Army Power Projection Platform (AP3) Operations; work may involve shift work, weekends, and/or holidays, to include mandatory overtime as mission requires.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience performing common heavy mobile equipment mechanic tasks that involve operating hand tools and devices to work on heavy mobile equipment such as bulldozers, road graders, crawler tractors, power shovels, locomotives, combat tanks, cranes, large missile transporters, fire trucks, and/or other construction equipment, material handling equipment, or powered support equipment. Also operate trucks and/or other heavy mobile equipment to complete assigned tasks. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility for this position, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. NOTE: This position has a selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment. Inside, incumbent is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noise. Outside, incumbent may on occasion be required to work in bad weather. Both inside and outside, frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, etc. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, and electrical shocks. Wears protective clothing and equipment as necessary.
