This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department in the Navy Region Southwest. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain the grounds and turf of golf course in playing condition.

Duties

Performs a variety of seasonal gardening tasks, such as, prepares soil with the proper mixture of sand, humus, topsoil and fertilizer; places seeds and plants in soil at proper depth, taking care not to damage roots while transplanting; lays sod, aerates lawns, and prunes and trims shrubs and hedges for a neat appearance and harvests, labels, and stores seeds and bulbs for later use. May measure and mix specified amounts of fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides following instructions on product labels and in a manner consistent with environmental instructions. Inspects plants for obvious plant diseases, plant insects, and unusual or poor plant growth and reports these conditions to the supervisor. Observes environmental and safety rules and regulations. May drive a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of up to 10,000 pounds throughout an installation under limited traffic conditions at low speeds to transport supplies and equipment. Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
• Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
• Must possess or be able to obtain certificate of completion of environmental training.
• A valid State driver's license is required to operate motor vehicle.

Qualifications

Must have a working knowledge of ground maintenance and accepted methods used in seeding, mowing and replacing grasses used on golf courses and bowling greens. Must have knowledge of soils, chemicals, equipment used for maintenance and upkeep of golf courses and bowling greens; common grass diseases and pests and environmentally approved methods used for their control and eradication.
