The Oklahoma City VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for Audiologists to work with the Audiology & Speech Pathology Service.

Duties

This position is located in the Audiology & Speech Pathology Service at the Oklahoma City VA in Oklahoma City, OK and/or CBOCs. The duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout the medical center including all clinical and other patient care areas involved with the service. The audiologist at this level conducts comprehensive audiological assessments to determine a patient's need for amplification, additional clinical care services, predicts effectiveness of amplification, determines need for and type of aural rehabilitation and counseling of the hearing impaired veteran and their family. Major duties and responsibilities of the position include: The audiologist at this level is responsible for identifying and evaluating individuals with auditory disorders that impact the reception and perception of speech, language and other acoustic signals. The audiologist administers the full range of behavioral and physiologic tests such as those that assess vestibular nerve function (ENG), auditory brainstem function, otoacoustic emissions, acoustic immittance, acoustic reflex and acoustic reflex decay, as well as a variety of special audiological procedures (e.g., SISI, Tone Decay, and Stenger tests). The audiologist uses the full range of behavioral and physiologic audiologic diagnostic tests to assist in the differential diagnosis of auditory disorders of such diverse disease entities as otosclerosis, otitis media, cholesteatoma, tumors of the tympanum, Menieres Syndrome, cerebellopontine angle tumors or other conductive, cochlea, and retrocochlear lesions of the auditory system. The audiologist at this level also evaluates the functional status of the ear canal for testing purposes and provides cerumen management. The audiologist is also responsible for the evaluation of type and degree of hearing loss for patients who are unable to provide consistent and reliable responses to conventional audiometric procedures. The audiologist at this level is responsible for direct services of a remedial and sometimes preventative nature. The services provided by the audiologist at this level encompass the accurate selection of monaural or binaural conventional and digital hearing aids including completely-in-the canal through behind-the-ear hearing aids, CROS, Bi-CROS, Multi-CROS hearing aids, conventional and implantable bone conduction hearing aids, middle ear implants, cochlear implants and other implantable hearing aids, and FM integrated hearing aids. The audiologist is also responsible for the instruction and counseling in the use, fitting, adjustment and modification of all personal amplification systems; The audiologist is responsible for the instruction and counseling in use of, and recommendations for procurement of special instruments such as desk amplifiers, telephone amplifiers, Bluetooth compatible devices, FM systems, infra-red devices, induction devices for use with phones, radios, televisions or other electronic devices necessary for communication. The audiologist is also responsible for the routine inspection and repair, when indicated, of all personal amplification systems or assistive listening devices where indicated.The audiologist at this level is also responsible for taking an impression of the outer portion of the ear for an ear mold, determination of need for special ear molds (such as vented, soft plastic, skeleton, acrylic, etc.) made necessary in cases of allergic reaction, severe hearing loss, or other reasons. The audiologist is also responsible for the issuance of ear defenders for prevention of acoustic trauma for those individuals working in a noisy environment. The audiologist at this level also recommends aural rehabilitation programs for patients with significant physical and psychological complicating conditions, develops treatment plans for difficult and complex cases in which communicative function has been impaired due to an auditory disorder, and designs training plans to assist patient and caregivers to in utilizing available hearing resources. The audiologist at this level sometimes makes a recommendation for change of job in those cases where hearing loss is progressing due to high noise level exposure. The incumbent will be responsible for providing a comprehensive program of aural rehabilitation to those hearing-impaired patients when this type of clinical management is indicated. Such programs may consist of instruction in maximum use of amplification, maximum utilization of residual hearing and development of supplementary avenues of communication (speech-reading). Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. You must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Education. Master's degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required. "Accredited" means a college or university accredited by a regional accreditation organization and an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) and/or the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech[1]Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree programs in audiology or hearing science. Licensure. For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above), the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. NOTE: The audiologist must maintain full, current, and unrestricted licensure/registration. Non-licensed audiologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate audiologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. ? 7405(c). Failure to obtain licensure during appointment as a graduate audiologist is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. Individuals appointed as graduate audiologists may not be promoted to the GS-12 level without being fully licensed. This may result in termination of employment. NOTE: All audiologists who perform compensation and pension (C&P) examinations are considered to be performing direct patient care duties, and must possess a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology (38 CFR 4.85). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determination Requirements: GS-9 Education and Experience: None beyond the basic requirements. GS-11 Education and Experience: Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an audiologist equivalent to the next lower level; OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; OR Doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a directly related field. AND In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, (KSAs) listed below: 1) Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice. 2) Ability to communicate orally and in writing 3) Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, applied acoustics, communication, psychoacoustics, and auditory/vestibular pathophysiology. 4) Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders 5) Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice; and 6) Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care professionals. GS-12 Licensure: The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. AND Education and Experience. In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology. For positions involved in research audiology assignments involving no direct patient care, completion of a doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a related field is fully qualifying. AND Staff audiologists at this grade level must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies of the practice of audiology to a wide range of populations. Individuals may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial (less that 25% of the time). AND The following KSAs are required: 1) Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies; 2) Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently; 3) Ability to conduct assessments and provide treatment interventions; 4) Ability to provide consultation to other health care professionals; 5) Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice; and 6) Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice.
