This position performs work as a Laundry Worker for the Dept. Of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Battle Creek, Michigan, Facilities Management Service, Environmental Management Services.

Duties

The primary work involves receiving, sorting, and marking linen and apparel in the Linen Distribution. The incumbent is responsible for receiving and sorting linen, transporting linen to and from the post laundry to using areas, assuring the availability of an adequate supply of linens and issuing the linen. Issuing uniforms/scrubs/patient clothing, marking, and sizing to meet customer's needs. Receives linen from the consolidated laundry in carts or other approved devices, unused linen from laundry carts and hampers from the wards and all other using areas. Receives clean linen and delivers it where directed, using a government delivery truck. Stocks linen carts, hampers, and special delivery bags for delivery to using areas according to predetermined quotas and requests from the using areas. Records all linen sent to using areas. Adjusts linen quotas as needed coordinating the changes in quotas with the supervisor or designee of the using area. Stocks shelves with excess linen for use as needed. Linen will be sorted according to type and class and placed in the proper area. Assists in linen inventory by counting all linen received in the linen distribution room during the time of inventory. Records the item counted according to type, class and size and submits completed count to the supervisor. Cleans and disinfects laundry hampers, shelves, and equipment using proper cleaning methods. Loads and offloads delivery truck with linen and delivers the linen to the using area returning with the empty carts and hampers for transport to the consolidated designated pick-up point. Receives, inventories, stores, delivers, and releases personal effects/uniforms/scrubs/lab coats according to procedures. Marks patient clothing/scrubs/uniforms/lab coats as needed. Checks number of items against actual items submitted. Uses established procedures to select correct number sequence. Checks number of items against actual items submitted. Logs and maintains records, verifies items according to procedures for record keeping purposes. Inventories items and verifies count. Secures all items according to appropriate procedure. Checks G&L for patient information. Files information including data cards, inventories and other administrative items. Marks and color codes all patient clothing, delivers to area assigned when completed. Conducts routine audits of storage area and linen. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: Workers stand continuously on concrete floors. Most tasks require quick hand and arm movements. Workers continually handle pieces of laundry weighing up to 3 kilograms (10 pounds) and occasionally items weighing up to 9 kilograms (20 pounds), e.g., a stack of sheets. Working Conditions: Laundries are extremely noisy and usually hot and humid. Workers are exposed to the possibility of bruises from carts or machinery. If required to sort laundry from patients with contagious diseases, workers wear protective masks, gloves, and gowns
