About the Position: Firefighter (Basic Life Support) at a Military Ocean Terminal. Serve as a member of a crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Serve as an Emergency Medical Technician assigned to fire response vehicle. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Duties

Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls while on duty engaged in the protection of life and property. Combat fires or rescue personnel on board ships where conditions create difficult and dangerous situations. Drive and operate firefighting and rescue vehicles. Operate pumps, generators, nozzles, and other firefighter equipment. Perform Basic Life Support procedures: Perform emergency procedures such as patient assessment and physical examination, and determine patient care based on initial assessment. Monitor patients baseline vital signs. Manage respirator and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Assist intermediate life support or paramedic staff. Assist intermediate life support or paramedic staff.

Requirements

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • For California Firefighters: Must possess and maintain at all times, a noncommercial driver's license or a commercial Class C and operate firefighting equipment, including tiller operator to have a firefighter "F" endorsement.
  • Firefighters with a Class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) are not required to add the "F" endorsement ton continue operating firefighting equipment, as long as CDL includes all applicable endorsement for the vehicle they are operating.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties and requires participation in a physical fitness program.
  • This position requires the incumbent to lift in excess of 45 lbs. Heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs. or more.
  • This position requires incumbent to wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • This position requires 72-hour work weeks (144 per pay period) which includes working 24-hour shifts, that may include rotating shift work to provide coverage on weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • This position is designated inclement weather essential.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain United States Coast Guard Master's license covering the tonnage of Fireboat within 18 months of appointment.
  • Position is designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) incumbent is required to report to or remain at work to support mission operations.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-6). In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirements above, applicants must also possess Firefighter I & Firefighter II, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Technician, Driver Operator Pumper Certification certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) AND a State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License. You MUST submit proof of the required referenced certifications AND proof of age with your application package, if your application package does not contain a copy of required certificationsand proof of age your application will be marked as incomplete, and you WILL NOTreceive any further consideration.
