The Puget Sound VA Medical Center is seeking a full-time, remote or on-site, diagnostic radiologist to serve as a lung cancer screening specialist and liaison for the Veterans Integrated Service Network 20(VISN 20), which covers hospital sites throughout Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho.
Duties
VISN 20 developed the first network-based lung cancer screening program in the VA Health System. This provides a unique opportunity to hire a radiologist (LCS-Rad) who is dedicated to supporting all facets of the lung cancer screening program.
An ideal candidate would have significant experience in interpreting lung cancer screening CTs and be proficient in interpreting non-neuro CT and general radiography. Additional experience in magnetic resonance, and ultrasonography is a plus, but not required. Fellowship training in thoracic or cardiothoracic radiology is not required but would be a valuable bonus. The LCS-Rad will collaborate with other medical professionals, including radiologists, pulmonologists, and support staff who have made lung cancer screening a focus of their careers.
Core responsibilities include but not limited to:
Collaborate with the Director of Radiology, the overall LCS Program Director, and the LCS Nurse Coordinators for the VISN 20 Lung Cancer Screening program.
Interpret imaging, monitor and improve quality, represent radiology at multidisciplinary conferences and oversight board meetings, advise sites on LCS program practices, assist in research initiatives, and participate in other general administrative duties.
Help create policies, procedures, and education/training materials for the LCS program.
Answer questions related to non-lung cancer screening protocols or monitor contrast injections at their assigned location if there is an unmet clinical need.
If there are no LCS cases to interpret, help VISN 20 sites read other types of studies, as assigned by either the VISN 20 Lead Radiologist or their local supervisor.
If the LCS radiologist has experience in cardiac imaging he/she could read cardiac studies for the VISN 20 Cardiac Imaging Program, which is centered at VA Puget Sound.
Academic opportunities: This position does not have any specific academic prerequisites. However, for any candidates potentially interested in academic pursuits, an appointment with our academic partner, the University of Washington (UW) is encouraged. This affiliation allows the LCS-Rad to teach, guide, mentor, and oversee UW radiology residents. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, (up to an additional 7.5% of their salary (not to exceed $15k) regular salary increases.

This position for a lung cancer screening radiologist (LCS-Rad) offers the option to work remotely or from any of the Puget Sound Imaging Center locations in Everett, American Lake, or Seattle. However, there may be occasional requirements for on-site presence to fulfill the clinical duties as described.

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience: An ideal candidate would have significant experience in interpreting lung cancer screening CTs and be proficient in interpreting non-neuro CT and general radiography. Additional experience in magnetic resonance, and ultrasonography is a plus, but not required. Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting,45 lbs and over, moderate carrying, under 15-44 lbs, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking 3+ hrs, standing 3+ hrs, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability distinguish shades of colors, hearing (aid permitted), mental and emotional stability.
Environmental Factors: Working closely with others, working alone, protracted or irregular hours of work are call hours, exposure to body fluids, exposure to ironizing radiation, radiation sources.
Education
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
