The Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of procedures in Nuclear Medicine. He/she works closely with technologists, imaging physicians, clinicians, Radiology nurses and support staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality imaging results, and patient satisfaction.
Duties
The duties of the Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist include but are not limited to:
a. Administration of radiopharmaceutical: Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist will perform and ensure performance of staff as follows:
Prepare, assay, and administer radiopharmaceutical doses by injection, inhalation or ingestion as prescribed. Knowledgeable regarding possible side effects of radiopharmaceuticals and other medications, such as lasix and captopril, to be administered; and take immediate action to remedy any noted effects. Be proficient in introducing intravenous catheters in patients for administration of radiopharmaceuticals and/or medications.
b. Equipment Operation: Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist will perform and ensure performance of staff as follows:
1. Operate nuclear medicine equipment such as gamma cameras, well counters, GM survey meters, thyroid uptake system, and dose calibrators for various patient procedures.
2. Calibrate thyroid uptake system, gamma cameras, dose calibrators and well counter. Adjust and maintain instruments, verify correct operation using established procedures and quality control standards.
3. Analyzes image data for quality; recognizes artifact and equipment malfunctions on images and takes indicated corrective actions.
4. The supervisor will ensure proper equipment function, oversee maintenance scheduling, troubleshoot; and coordinate needed repair with Biomedical Engineering. The supervisor will collaborate with section chief and administrative officer in the evaluation and selection of future equipment purchases and coordinate installation and renovation.
c. Procedures: Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist will perform and ensure performance of staff as follows:
1. Perform a full range of nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging, non-imaging, invitro and therapeutic procedures, including highly specialized computer assisted studies such as gated, tomographic, quantitative procedures.
2. Provide patient education; explain procedure, answer questions, position patient for all necessary views and tend to their comfort for the duration of the procedure. Instruct patient, family and nursing staff in radiation safety precautions.
3. Knowledgeable in three dimensional anatomies. Analyze procedure images for quality, identify abnormalities and artifacts, and obtain additional images when necessary.
4. The supervisor is responsible for overall quality of imaging production and protocol applications. He/she coordinates, the development, review and implementation of imaging protocols to ensure optimal image data for interpretation. The supervisor will collaborate with the section chief to determine
desired outcomes and development of imaging protocols.
5. The supervisor ensures accurate performance of all documentation and record keeping related to each examination. This includes case register and edit in VISTA, CPRS progress notes and IMED consent; completion of procedure records and archival of image data on appropriate medium and/or to PACs and accuracy of CPT coding for examination performed.
6. Participate in approved research projects involving Nuclear Medicine studies.
d. Radiation Safety:
1. Perform required technical procedures for safe receipt, handling, transport, usage and disposal of radioactive materials, assuring compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), National Health Physics Program (NHPP), Department of Transportation (DOT) and license conditions. Understand different precautions used based upon the various package types. Takes appropriate action to address improper packaging.
e. Clinic Scheduling and Operations:
1. The Supervisor monitors workload to ensure timely imaging examination for both outpatients and inpatients. He/she makes adjustments to staffing, duty assignments, and work schedules, accordingly. He/she evaluates needs for changes in staffing levels and collaborates with the Chief Technologist in addressing needs.
f. Staff Management:
1. The supervisor is responsible for Nuclear Medicine Technologists performance appraisal and competency assessment; awards and recognition; communicates and documents informal and formal counseling, corrective actions and performance improvement plans; conflict resolution; recruitment and selection; according to established guidelines and policies, under the supervision of the Chief Technologist.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. ? 7403(f).
Certification: All applicants must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N). NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification eligibility requirements are normally satisfied by one of the following:
(1) Completion of a NMTCB-recognized nuclear medicine technology program, OR
(2)Completion of a nuclear medicine technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology(JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's degree. Educational programs must have structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio-pharmacy, as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB.
NOTE: Technologists functioning as multi-modality technologists require additional specific certifications as stated in assignment descriptions below.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
Nuclear Medicine Technologist, GS-0601-12
Experience. For assignments above the journey level, the candidate must have 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Resume must include hours per week for work experience credit.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs:
i. *Ability to assign and evaluate work of subordinate staff as well as resolve problems that may interfere with the delivery of nuclear medicine services by staff members.
ii. Skill in providing complex nuclear medicine patient procedures.
iii. *Ability to develop and initiate new protocols which apply to current research findings.
iv. *Skill in providing administrative reports both orally and in writing [with higher level authorities (i.e., NHPP, TJC, NRC, Inspector General, executive leadership)].
v. *Ability to interview candidates for positions in the section; recommend appointments, advancements, or, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; evaluate performance; and identify continuing education and training needs.
