This Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT), Ultrasound, position is assigned to the Evansville VA Healthcare Center, Radiology Service; within the Marion VAMC medical system. EHCC is an outpatient healthcare center located in Evansville, IN.

Duties

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT), Ultrasound Technologist, employee at this level performs primarily ultrasound but could be asked to perform general diagnostic radiology procedures within licensure. Incumbent must carry out the assigned tasks independently. Due to workload demands in ultrasound clinic, the technologist performs primarily in ultrasound, but could be asked to cover other areas in times of staffing shortage or when MIT is present on duty to include scheduling/ administrative duties of other staff positions at or below the US/DRT grade level. This specialty modality uses high frequency sound waves & other diagnostic techniques for medical purposes. The technologist must be competent in the production, use, recognition, & analysis of ultrasound images & patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment. The sonographer is regarded as the expert source & the interpreting radiologist relies heavily on the skills, knowledge, & abilities of the sonographers in providing a final interpretation. The technologist requires knowledge of image acquisition in ultrasound, Computerized/Digital Radiography (CR/DR), Picture Archiving & Communication Systems (PACS), National Teleradiology Portal to ensure independent use of these systems. Performs, in an outpatient clinic setting, all ultrasound and radiology examinations ranging from the routine to the highly specialized. Performance of the examination requires proper alignment and position of the patient. Sets up and adjusts all equipment and manually maneuvers the transducer to perform the exam. Performs ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, neck, chest, extremities, retroperitoneal space for purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders. Also performs vascular imaging, both arterial and venous. Knows and understand the principles of ultrasound and the highly specialized ultrasound and radiology equipment to approve the acceptability or rejection of each scan. This includes preparation and supplies, scanning motions, Time Compensated Gain (TCG), zoom or expansion, hard copy, picture-oriented examination, organ-oriented examination, and initial interpretation of the examination. Technologist notes of the examination require identifying normal and pathological appearances. Pathologic appearance includes but is not limited to intraluminal echoes that shadow, polyp, carcinoma, thick wall, size, obstructing lesions, common duct stone, tumor, benign strictures, texture, solid mass, cystic mass. Technologist notes will be forwarded by the Ultrasound Technologist to the Radiologist before final interpretation is made. Advises radiologist of significant abnormalities that would require their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing exam. The technologist must be skilled in the technique of performing localization studies for invasive procedures such as biopsies and aspirations. Maintains sterile field for procedures such as biopsies and/or aspirations, drainage, etc. Appropriately prepares sterile tray, to include preparation of contrast, supplying catheters and guide wires, sterile assurance of the patient and equipment may meet the sterile field with the purpose of assuring that all preventive measures have been taken to prevent contamination of the patient and/or equipment. Appropriately labels all articles on the sterile tray. This is done to minimize hazards associated with invasive procedures, and involves the use of sterile packs, gloves, syringes, guide wires, catheters, cleanup trays, etc. Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/technique; the storage of sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and 'sharps'; proper attire; hand washing practices; time-out procedure; and correct site invasive procedure. Maintains all competency requirement of the position including Basic Life Support CPR May serve as a peer reviewer for other staff. The technologist may be asked to perform administrative duties and other duties as assigned during their tour. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizen: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.) Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Grade Determinations: Grade Determinations: GS-9 Experience: At least 1 year of experience to the next lower grade level (GS-8) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Advanced DRT employees at this level (GS-9) are fully functional as an advanced DRT and are able to carry out the assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk(*): *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures; Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers; *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure; Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography; Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Preferred Experience: Possess ARDMS and ARRT (R) license. References: VA Handbook 5005/77, Part II, Appendix G25, Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist Qualification Standard , dated June 26, 2014. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is at the GS-9 level. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work require long periods of standing, walking, and sitting. Work involves constant bending, lifting, twisting, and carrying moderately heavy items such as cassettes. Use of mobile x-ray and ultrasound units in the main hospital and in the operating room requires twisting, turning to manipulate the x-ray tube and/or ultrasound unit. The work requires pushing wheelchair and stretcher patients. Positioning patients who are unconscious or disabled requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees.
