Duties
The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin (USAO) is seeking two exceptional attorneys to join our team as Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Civil Division. The USAO handles a wide variety of challenging and impactful criminal and civil cases and has responsibility for the region covering 28 countries in roughly the eastern one-third of the state. The USAO has its main office in Milwaukee and a branch office in Green Bay.
Civil Division AUSAs are responsible for defending the federal government and its employees in civil actions alleging employment discrimination, torts (personal injuries and medical malpractice), constitutional torts, immigration adjudications, social security disability appeals, foreclosures, and bankruptcy matters. Civil Division AUSAs also enforce civil statutes involving health care and procurement fraud, civil debts owed to the federal government, and criminal fines and restitution on behalf of crime victims.
One of the two attorneys will focus primarily on representing the United States in civil affirmative civil rights enforcement litigation actions, including housing and fair lending, ADA enforcement, the Civil Rights of Institutional Persons Act, voting rights, service members' rights, pattern and practice investigations, human trafficking, and employment discrimination. The civil rights AUSA will also be an ambassador for justice in our community, working closely with agency partners and participating in outreach events throughout the district to promote civil rights.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
United States citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants should have a demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a demanding office as well as demonstrate analytical ability, good judgment, and excellent communication and courtroom skills. Successful candidates should have a strong academic background, possess superior oral and written communication skills, possess strong interpersonal skills, and have demonstrated the capacity to work effectively with a team, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Successful candidates should also possess the knowledge and ability to use computers and computer applications in performing day-to-day work requirements. Applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and highly professional manner with other attorneys, professional support staff, client agency representatives, law enforcement officers/investigators, opposing counsel, and court staff.
